I think that everyone should here should be forewarned. If your Amazon account should be compromised by someone else (fraudulent use) Amazon will close that account and require you to open a new one. That is not a problem. However, THEY WILL REFUSE TO TRANSFER YOUR LIBRARY TO YOUR NEW ACCOUNT!!! YOU WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR BOOKS...only to those on your device. Someone attempted to use access my Amazon account (and Paypal etc....the whole 9 yards) and AMAZON, while canceling any subscription orders I have, refuses to allow me access to MY books. If you want to be sure you get to keep your books, do not archive them at Amazon.

As a rule of thumb, I back up all my books using Calibre. However, something tells me we aren't getting the whole story... You state someone "attempted" to access your account which leaves me to believe you should still have access to it and should be able to just change your password or something. In the event that the account has to be closed, I guess I can understand Amazon not wanting to transfer digital content. I hope you didn't have any Gift Card balances on that account either, because you probably won't get that transferred either.

It sounds unpleasant -- but I'm mostly just confused by this post. (What exactly is "fraudulent use?" And how could someone get access to your account?) Sorry if I sound unsympathetic. I've been reading mostly free ebooks on my Kindle, so I don't have to worry too much about having to buy them a second time.

Another example of why to not take for granted that your books will always be there. After I purchase every book and even the free ones, I run them through calibre and make them truly mine. I have three separate backups of my calibre library in three spots, same with my music and basically anything I don't want to lose. I don't like to depend on anyone but myself to protect what I deem valuable. Another reason that DRM is evil.

I'm with monkeygirl. (Okay, that's a phrase I never thought I'd utter, but in context it makes sense! ) I want my stuff on my computer, backed up on my media. Period. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't trust The Cloud to take my stuff as seriously I take it.

Good points Monkeygirl (why do I feel like a superhero saying that?). I think I'll take the opportunity this weekend to back everything up. I've already donated 4/5 of my books. I don't think I could handle losing my 1000+ books due to a technical issue.

Those of you backing up your books, bear in mind that your Amazon purchased books are device specific. Each time you get a new device or App, you will still have to download your books from your Amazon archive. If for any reason it isn't available you won't be able to use your own backed up files, except for non-Amazon books.

I've been procrastinating on backing my books up. Thanks for the motivation to push me along.

For me, this just isn't something I'm concerned about. I'm more concerned about making sure my log in credentials will be available to people when I die so my books don't fade into the ether never to be read again . . . .

Hello fellow Kindlers. Once a month (or week if you prefer)I create a folder on my external Hard Drive naming it 'Kindle Aug 1 2011' for example. I attach my kindle to the PC. I select all the Kindle folders and copy them to the newly created folder. This would include all the kindle documents, screensavers (yes, I hacked and regularly replace screensavers to current family photos more meaningful to me), music files (Kindle is very versatile isn't it). If I ever lose my kindle or heaven forbid it dies..I do have what is current at least to the first of any month. I also use Calibre to scan these monthly files giving me more options. After a few months, just delete older months off the Hard Drive. Works for me, may be a useful method for anyone else too.

If you are not willing to strip DRM this is true. My books are stored on my computer and the DRM is removed. I bought them, I will keep them and read them where I want to.

Hostage implies that Amazon wants something from you in order to make them available again. This doesn’t seem to be the case.
In any event, this is a great example of the downside of DRM.

Does Caliber remove DRM. I've never used any of the programs like that but it might make sense to back up my 500+ Amazon books without DRM.

As a reminder, removing DRM is against Amazon's terms of service. For this reason we don't allow discussion of it on KindleBoards nor do we allow links to 'how to' sites. Such posts will be deleted without comment.

I disinfect (remove the DRM) so that I do have a true backup of my books able to go on any device I choose. I do this each time a get a book from Amazon so I don't forget to later. I get mostly free books from amazon and the over priced bestsellers from the library so I am all set. (Yes I read library books on my kindle hehe)

I think, if the book is DRM free, you can download it to new device.

I wouldn't say that the library would be held "hostage." That implies that you may get it back. They just mock you as they execute the library instead.

I don't think it does. The creator has even started a site, Open Books, for listing DRM-free titles.

I think, if the book is DRM free, you can download it to new device. It depends on the device. You might have to convert the ebook to a different format. There are programs that can do that for you. Calibre has plugins that you can install that will remove the DRM. We are not allowed to discuss where to find those plug ins on this website or how to use them.

There are plugins that do it, but it is against forum rules to discuss them. Anyways, I do get rid of DRM on any books I buy. This allows me to buy from any of the major ebook stores and be able to convert to mobi to use on my kindle. I've gotten quite a few freebies that were free on kobo or B and N that weren't free on amazon. I like having the options to do that. The only bookstore I won't use is ibooks even though I have an Ipad. I don't like the store on principle of the whole agency pricing debacle plus their DRM hasn't been cracked. I think I bought like 2 books there before I knew better. One of which I replaced with a kindle friendly one, and the other well I haven't read it yet, but will probably end up reading it on the ipad.

Wow I didn't even know it was possible to remove DRM from something. I'm pretty naive about that I guess.

Good Lord, what next to worry about! I can't imagine someone wanting to hack a Kindle account. I always relate reading to honest, intelligent people...not crooks!
