The K3 starts at $114 which is one-third the price of the KDX.
To those who own a DX: do you think the higher price is commensurate with the larger screen/hardware?
to those who do/don't: Would you like Amazon to lower the price? if so, what do you think would be a fair price?

I think DX has always held firm...but at first, it was only like $100.00 more than the Kindle, now it's like $200 more!! I would love to see the price drop...I'll be honest, since I can't read more than one device at a time, I have a hard time convincing myself to splurge on the pricy DX, where as, I'll buy Kindles all day--4, 5, 6, 7...

The DX is the first e-reader I've owned, so I can't really compare it to anything else. But I do love it, and I can imagine that the larger screen would make for a more enjoyable reading experience.
As for the price, yeah it's a bit steep. As successful as the Kindle has been I guess they still consider the DX to be a bit of a niche item, so the price hasn't gone down. Although it wouldn't surprise me if the next model will find a medium between the K3 and the DX, both in size and in price.

I had a friend who once suggested a cynical theory. Amazon released the expensive Kindle DX just so the smaller Kindles would look cheaper!
But seriously, I think the price of the Kindle DX will probably come down. Now that Amazon is selling large quantities of Kindles, they can mass-produce most of the components, which will make them cheaper for Amazon to build. Hopefully, they'll start passing those savings along to us!

I have no idea, except that maybe wealthy business people are the DX's biggest buyer (for the better pdf viewing and such) and are willing to pay premium. It was the gold box deal of the day once and even at $80 off (I believe) it couldn't outsell the regular kindles on the electronics bestseller list.

I bought my Mom a DX when they were $469 or whatever they originally were. I waited until the fell to their current price to buy mine. I love the bigger screen and miss it when I travel but I find it a bit to bulky to comfortably use on the plane.

The DX was originally priced at $489, now down to $379. The difference between that and the price of the 'regular' Kindle doesn't surprise me at all. I'm sure Amazon has nearly recouped development costs on the 6" Kindle because of how many they've sold. And no doubt component prices have come down. (Plus I expect they're selling at cost or below using the razor/razorblade model.
BUT the DX has a MUCH larger e-ink screen. . .and there's no other reseller offering anything like it. So Amazon is the only one purchasing screens of that size. That's going to make it more expensive. They may also not sell as many books, on average, to DX owners because many are used for personal documents -- PDF's and such that work better on that size screen.
So I won't be surprised if Amazon occasionally puts them on sale, but I'm not at all surprised that the price hasn't come down more than it has.
I will also observe that if Amazon begins selling a tablet sized device that will likely affect the pricing on the DX, and vice versa. . . .

I jumped at the DX when Staples had it for $289. I don't think I would have bought one at it's current price though. I like it a lot, I don't regret buying it at all... but it's a $289 like, not a $379 kind of like.  So maybe if they came down a bit on the price they could move a few more? |

Could it be as simple as lack of competition for an eink reader with that size of screen? Maybe if Kobo or Nook came out with a comparable reader at a lower cost, we'd see more price movement from Amazon.

That makes sense to me, anyhow. I imagine that it may also be seen as a "luxury" item. And, as such, it'd be priced as a "luxury" item. |

its the competition thing. The kindle price was reduced to be just below the nook price whenever they dropped the price. No competing DX size being priced lower..... no reason to lower the price.
I also assume that dxs are selling at this price, or they would lower it some.

I'm just surprised they haven't updated the DX series. There isn't a wifi version of the DX, and it still has the K2 joystick.

I am curious to see when Amazon rolls out their new product line will they discontinue the DX? They already discontinued some of their accessories (the different colors for the covers). I bought my Mom one for Christmas, it was nice. But at almost $400 I have a hard time getting one for myself.
