I was looking for crush-proof cases for my $114 investment. At first I found "offical" cases that ran $50 and up. So I looked for an alternative. What I found was a paint gun pistol case, about $30 from Hong Kong. An alternative was a plastic pencil box, fits a naked Kindle 3 perfectly, and for $.88.

The Kindle sat at an angle in the pencil case, so I could add other fairly non-damaging items to the case, like a screen cloth, notes on paper, etc.

You can also hollow out an old hardcover book and use it as a case. I did this myself and it's working out very well. It's mostly for travel, but it allows me to toss the Kindle into a bag without worrying about the Kindle being crushed by other objects in the bag.

I have the Thule Kindle Sleeve and can totally recommend it as a tough case. I would call it crush resistant rather than crush proof, but it is a fantastic compromise between protective and light weight. Its really no heavier than most soft cases but is much more rigid and it looks very modern.

It was $39.99 at Amazon.

Unfortunately it is currently unavailable from Amazon. You might try searching for "Thule TEKS-101 Kindle Sleeve"
I found it on this site http://www.kcover.net/thule-black-kindle-sleeve/

Thule will not show it on their US site but will on their UK site.
