 ... and it's a good one ....

I was just reading the October sign up thread with all the "I'm in again, same info" posts and had an idea. How about if you started a thread for the game players. Each person could have one post and they could add to/update that post to include the info for the game (usual genres, deal breakers) but they could also include other info, such as the books that were suggested for them for the game and were successes (or duds), a link to their Goodreads list, other books they've read that they've liked, etc. I am thinking it would be an easy way to compile the info in one place and maybe make it easier for you when make the list of selectors/selectees since you wouldn't have to go searching for the "same info" when you write the list. Just point folks to the thread.

By having one post per person and asking people to update in the post (similar to the way deb used to do it in the the book reading count list) it would keep the thread fairly short. A person could drop out and not play for a month or two (or quit completely) and their post would still be there to be updated, whenever. The thread would be both a source of info about who likes what for the game, as well as an archive of players, both current and past.

I like the idea and I think a stickied thread where we could stick any info we wanted would be good .... whadda ya think?   love it?  hate it?  indifferent?  maybe you have an idea or two do make it funner?

To give an example, this is sort of what I was thinking...

~~

Started playing the game in March 2010. My original listing of usual genres and dealbreakers:

Preferred genres:

Historical fiction (all types, including military); Contemporary m/m romance (not m/f); Non-fiction for subjects I am interested in

Deal breakers:

Science fiction; Horror; Stephen King; Vampires; anything ultra-violent; Christian fiction

I took a break from the game from October 2010 through May 2011 (although I did act as a back-up minion a few times during those months). When I came back in June, this was my modified request:

I'll dive in again because it's been a few months and I keep trying.

I'll be honest, I'm the most high-maintenance player in this game. I love being a picker (and I think I do pretty well in that department) but I have a harder time as a pickee. Ready to take me on? Okay, here's a few parameters:

1) I want something well written and absorbing. I do much better with books that I immediately get into and can't put down.
1.5) It helps if you have read the book and can tell me that you couldn't put it down when you read it.
2) Don't give me classics or books I am "supposed" to read. I have an aversion to assigned reading and when I get a selection that feels assigned I tend to reject it out of hand. Of course you may not know what on earth I am talking about but I am just being honest!
3) In general, I do better with newer books rather than classics. If something is a classic and I haven't read it, there is probably a reason why.
4) In general, I do better with shorter books rather than long. I have a hard time committing to a tome.
5) If the book has a gay character or two, I am probably going to be more interested.
6) If all of the above is too overwhelming, consider non-fiction, especially science (healthcare, medical) or military history.

Intimidated? Who wants to take me on? LOL

PS. I do have a goodreads bookshelf: http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/3134800-leslie-nicoll

Here are my game books:

March 2010: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (listened to the audiobook)
April 2010: Magic's Pawn *****
May 2010: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (didn't finish)
June 2010: Day of the Triffids (didn't finish)
July 2010: The Hunger Games (enjoyed so much I read the other two books in the series)
August 2010: Bone Shop (didn't finish)
September 2010: Blood Child (didn't finish)
break
June 2011: Unbroken *****
July 2011: I Am Not Myself These Days (enjoyed so much I read the author's other memoir, ordered his cookbook, and bought the DVD of his TV series)
August 2011: Assassin's Apprentice (enjoyed so much I read the five additional books in the series! 65,615 locations in all!)
September 2011: The Phantom Tollbooth (haven't finished yet); Year of Wonders (audiobook) *****
October 2011:The Winds of War...reading slowly, but enjoying.

Not sure how it will work but I won't be until I actually try it.  I can do whatever is easiest for the person doing all the work.

Thanks Leslie for providing a detailed example of how this would work Smiley
