To give an example, this is sort of what I was thinking...
~~
Started playing the game in March 2010. My original listing of usual genres and dealbreakers:
Preferred genres:Historical fiction (all types, including military); Contemporary m/m romance (not m/f); Non-fiction for subjects I am interested in
Deal breakers:Science fiction; Horror; Stephen King; Vampires; anything ultra-violent; Christian fiction
I took a break from the game from October 2010 through May 2011 (although I did act as a back-up minion a few times during those months). When I came back in June, this was my modified request:
I'll dive in again because it's been a few months and I keep trying.
I'll be honest, I'm the most high-maintenance player in this game. I love being a
picker (and I think I do pretty well in that department) but I have a harder time as a
pickee. Ready to take me on? Okay, here's a few parameters:
1) I want something well written and absorbing. I do much better with books that I immediately get into and can't put down.
1.5) It helps if you have read the book and can tell me that you couldn't put it down when you read it.
2) Don't give me classics or books I am "supposed" to read. I have an aversion to assigned reading and when I get a selection that feels assigned I tend to reject it out of hand. Of course you may not know what on earth I am talking about but I am just being honest!
3) In general, I do better with newer books rather than classics. If something is a classic and I haven't read it, there is probably a reason why.
4) In general, I do better with shorter books rather than long. I have a hard time committing to a tome.
5) If the book has a gay character or two, I am probably going to be more interested.
6) If all of the above is too overwhelming, consider non-fiction, especially science (healthcare, medical) or military history.
Intimidated? Who wants to take me on? LOL
PS. I do have a goodreads bookshelf:
