The subject describes my knowledge of the Kindle that I recently received as a gift . . .

I know how to search for a title on the device, but how do I find titles when I am on this forum ? ?

Specifically, LeCarre's Honourable Schoolboy . . .

Apologies to all for gross ignorance  --  perhaps it can be offset by insatiable curiosity . . .

The first thing to know is that this forum is NOT Amazon. . . . it's an independent forum for fans of the Kindle.  There are links above to Amazon -- it's great when you use those links to get there because that way KindleBoards gets a small 'affiliate' payment.

On Amazon the best thing to do is just click around.  You can't break anything. . . . . there are search boxes. . . .there's a Kindle support help section. . . . . just "play".

And, in fact, that's the best way to find out what's here too! Cheesy

First and foremost, welcome to the forum. Get over to the Introductions and Welcomes forum and let people know who you are. You've just tapped into the largest Kindle knowledgebase in the world!  Next, if you haven't read the manual, do so. It really will explain a lot. Books - a large number of free books are available. The Book Bazaar forum has a free books thread. Check there. Gutenberg.org, Manybooks, Freeboooks ... several others. Have you registered your Kindle with Amazon? If so, you can buy books very easily; too easily really! The Tips and Tricks forum has a thread titled, "The All New Kindle 3rd Generation FAQs - a TON of information. That will get you started. Others will chime in with their suggestions. Again, welcome!

Welcome! Enjoy your Kindle!

I second that suggestion to read the "Kindle User's Guide" that comes on your Kindle. It will tell you a lot that isn't immediately intuitive about the Kindle, like how to turn off those automatic underlines that might be annoying you already.

It's really a terrific device and the more you learn about it the better you'll like it!

I find it's a lot easier to shop for ebooks using my web browser, at Amazon.com.  If you ever need a shortcut to get there, you can also just type in Amazon.com/kindlestore  (though Ann is right - you can also just click on the links at the top of this page).

But you can also shop for ebooks with your Kindle.  Just press the alt key and the Home button (on the side of your Kindle) at the same time, and your Kindle will take you straight to an Amazon web page where you can shop for books.  Or when you're on the Home screen, you can just type the name of an author or title that you're looking for -- and then press the square "controller" button to the right.  One of your choices will be to search the Kindle Store for those words -- and when your controller nudges have highlighted that choice, just press down (to then select the choice!)

Your Kindle should already be hooked up to your Amazon account (and its associated credit card), so you're ready to start buying ebooks!

Welcome to the world of Kindle.  You have just opened up a whole new world of reading.  Don't be afraid to explore some lesser-known authors who may be selling their prices for low cost.   You will find that the Kindle is about to make you read more and discover new talent in ways a standard bookstore never could.
