I started with a Kindle 1 and now I have a K2 which I prefer. I came to accept the boxiness of K1; however, I really do like the sleekness of K2. Although I can't change the battery of this one, I am very impressed with how long the battery of K2 lasts before I have to recharge it. The K2 dictionary use is much better than K1. With the K1, the definition of all the words on a line was given. But with the 2, I can go straight to the word I need. K1 didn't read to me when I was on the treadmill. Although sometimes K2's robot voice mispronounces, I can usually tell what the word was supposed to be. {Although I was very confused by all the "eckers" in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy until I realised it was actually "aircars!"} Although I was one of the unfortunates who saw the text disappear in the sunlight, Amazon's customer service was excellent and I got a brand knew nonfading one within two days and plenty of time to try it out to be sure it worked before I had to return the old one. patrisha

Enjoy your new Kindle. I sold my K1 the day the K2 was announced and haven't regretted my decision (well, except for the 2 weeks I was without a Kindle..but then I just stole borrowed my daughter's K1.
I prefer almost everything about the K2 with the exception of the keyboard. It's not that big of a deal though, as I rarely use it.
I've never had any issues with the contrast or fading with my K2. I love that the page buttons turn in and love the little 5-way controller. The search and dictionary feature are nicer (IMO) as well.
I don't use the text to speech, so I can't comment on that. I prefer the audio books I buy from Audible.

I love my K1, but if I were buying one now, I would get a K2.

After all this, I want to know what you think after you've had your new Kindle for a few days. Please post back to tell us.
I have a K2, my first & only experience with a Kindle, and I love it! I have not had the sun fade issue. I have not installed any hacks. The screen sometimes seems a little too dark, but it seems related to the degree/type of light in the area; clipping on my Mighty Bright light takes care of that.

I most definately will.
I got invited to an inpromtu (am I even spelling that right?) camping trip a few hours after I placed the hour...I figure it'll be a great time to try it out. I'm just wishing now I ordered one of those nifty book lights to go with it...anyone have any suggestions for one worth getting?

Funny you should mention it. I'm also about to buy a book light and have been doing a bit of research. The clear favourite on the boards is the MightyBright Xtraflex2 which you can buy on Amazon. It has two LED's for two different brightness modes, takes 3x AAA batteries, and seems pretty well received because it lights up the screen in a bight white light and does a good job of it, according to pretty much everyone who owns one. I think I'll take the plunge and buy this one tonight.

If you are going camping I would recommend a head lamp. Useful for reading and for walking to the bathroom. My friends with regular flashlights when camping are always jealous of my fiancee and I with our head lamps. We can use both hands and easily get around in the dark. I use mine at home and when traveling for reading.

A number of people have also found this light at Barnes & Noble (and maybe Target?).

And Borders too, according to a few people on the boards. Can't say for sure though, it's not even available in Australia where I am.

I just read another thread that says Borders has a 30% off coupon available online. And one poster said they used the coupon to get their Mighty Bright. deb

I'm here to add my two cents... I have both K1 and K2. When I got the K2, I was hesitant and didn't think I would stick with it. Well, I was wrong. I have really come to like my K2 for whatever reasons... I was going to keep my K1, but it just sits there. I feel really bad for it's lonliness, so I have decided to sell it. I hope it finds a good home. I am the Lisa that Ricky has referred to. My mom also upgraded and we sold hers to Ricky. I am so happy her mother likes it. I would definitely do the upgrade. The only thing I can really see you losing is the memory card slot. Otherwise, you gain several more things with the K2.

I've had a couple people ask about my K1 for sale. I have taken it off Ebay. If you are interested in it, please contact me through the boards and I'll send you my email. It's in excellent condition. I've had it skinned and kept in a case. No wear marks. I am including an MEdge cover, a 4gb sd card, and an extra wall charger.

Just a quick follow up post..
Got back from my camping trip today, kindle in hand.
I absolutely loved having the kindle with me on the trip. I ended up sitting around the campsite reading for most of the day. It was in direct sunlight 99% of the time and there was no fade out at all- so I'm guessing I'm free and clear of the vampire syndrome people have complained about. I installed one of the text hacks on it to make the font "pop" a bit more (using the Bold Narrow Native font). Reminds me alot of how the K1 looked.
Only quirk I have is that the buttons on the right side of the unit (Home/Next Page) click louder than those on the left (Prev/Next Page). It's not something that will make or break the device, but after everyone was asleep last night and I was reading, I found if I pressed the buttons on the left, I couldn't even really hear anything, but on the right side, the click was much more distinctive and pronounced.
Anyone else notice this about their kindles? It'd be nice to hear something back so I don't feel crazy =X

I have the same thing: the buttons on the right make a click. You aren't crazy. It also seems like the buttons on the right have more travel compared to the left buttons. I kinda like the sound of it...like listening to the coffee brewing at my mum's. However, not so great when people are sleeping in the same place you are reading; I generally use my left hand to change pages so not a biggie for me.
