Today's before/after is Russell Phillips's "A Fleet in Being," a short history of perhaps the oddest navy in World War I:

The Blurb Doctor also now has a mailing list! I'll be sending out blurb-writing tips and the occasional discount and contest. Smiley

Thanks, Liz! I'm gradually clearing up a backlog and slots are opening up. Writing blurbs helps keep my mind off my editor; she's reading through my second book right now and the waiting is driving me CRAZY!

Today's before/after is KBer Donna Brown's "Double-Take Tales," a short story collection:

http://blurbdoctor.blogspot.com/2011/12/new-beforeafter-double-take-tales.html

This is the second blurb I've done for the Browns, and I have one more in the queue. Happy customers! Smiley

I'm almost through the backlog of blurbs from last week's rush. If you want to book a slot before the first of the year rush, book now; I take blurbs first-come first-served.

I highlight both my successes and my failures at The Blurb Doctor, and today's before/after is an example of the latter: E.S. Lark's "The Fallen." She chose not to use what I wrote:

New before/after at the Blurb Doctor: "Love Is the Drug." This is notable because it was a cutting-down of an existing blurb to fit into an ad space.

http://blurbdoctor.blogspot.com/2012/03/spoiler-syndrome.html

Nice blog and I'm struggling with this spoiler syndrome too. But I have a problem. I don't want to give away things because I have a reason for that. Yeah, I know. You may hear this from every second author. But here comes the twist, which is rather unusual. Even the reviewers says the very same, what I do. They don't tell anything about the story in the reviews to do not spoil anything at all. i.e.: "... is about... well you'll just have to read it and find out.", or "I can't say too much about the plot, because I don't want to give it away.". And they've read it, so they understand it. So, even the reviewers tell the same what I tell in the present blurb, no more as they also don't want to give away what is in it. So it's a chess-mate. Do you have any advice for this?

NOTHING about the story? At all? I don't know if there's any story that you can't at least set up. Even "The Sixth Sense" has a set-up. Without seeing the actual blurb and knowing the actual story line, I can only say I'm skeptical.

As I say in the piece, start with a blurb that tells everything and walk it back. If it's in the first half of the book, it's fair game even if you think it's a spoiler. That's a hook, not a spoiler, as someone else here once said (Edward W. Robertson--I like to give credit where it's due). You have to give people something. If you don't, no one's going to pick up the book. You're asking people to take it on faith that they'll like a story about which they know nothing, and that's not going to work unless you have a devoted audience who'll buy anything you produce sight unseen.
