I have a friend that is in the hospital and a group of us were thinking of getting him a Kindle, for when he gets out. I want to get him the Kindle Wireless and 3g. Can I get him one without the ads on it? I was looking and just saw the one with ads, unless I'm looking at it wrong.\
Thanks

Yes!
You can always get a non-ad version of the Kindle for about $30 more.

If you are thinking about the touch it is actually $189 so $40 more but if you get the ones with the Ad's you can turn them off at anytime for $30 so it is actually cheaper to do it that way.

The wireless component is of no use unless you have a wireless network to plug into, something I doubt the hospital will let you do. The best thing for you to do, in my opinion is to get a wish list from him of the top five books that he has been wanting to read and load those books on the kindle from your amazon account the bring it to him. Then go get the kindle from him at regular intervals to load more.

3G would take care of that - last time I checked my cell phone still worked at the hospital

Most hospitals actually have wireless and let you use a 3g connection. At least all that I have been to and friends/family have been in for a extended stay. They just don't like you to use cell phones in the ER and such usually in private rooms tho it is less of an issue.

The Kindle Keyboard is available NOW and has both WiFi and 3G. . . on the product page you'll see where you can select with or without special offers for two different prices. The Kindle Keyboard and the Basic Kindle are also both available with WiFi only. Again, you can choose with or without special offers for each. With WiFi there needs to be a network you can connect to. . .I'd check with the hospital to see if there is one. With 3G it will use the ATT cell network. . . . the hospital may or may not have rules about using cell phones, but that's as often because they don't want extraneous noisy conversations/ringing/beeping as because of any interference danger. And, as suggested, the rules are often different in the ER vs on the various wards. Again, I'd check with the hospital to find out. I know for a fact that a friend of mine who had knee surgery was able to use his iPad in the hospital.

Thanks for all your answers. We are going to get it for him when he gets out of the hospital. We will probably get the one without ads. I think that one is $149?

The one with the keyboard, wifi only is $139 without special offers. The one with the keyboard, wifi plus 3g is $189 without special offers. The basic kindle without special offers is $109 -- no keyboard, no 3G available
The Kindle TOUCH is not yet available -- release date is November 21. It also comes with and without special offers. The WiFi only w/o SO's is $139. WiFi+3G w/o SO's is $189,
The one that is $149 is the Touch 3G with special offers. Which will ship November 21.

Unless they changed it I am pretty sure getting the ones WITH the Ads then turning them off after you get it is cheaper then straight out buying the one without the Ads

I think it ends up being the same thing. At least, the only one you can do that with right now is the Basic and they charge you $30 to remove them. You can't do it with either Keyboard model even though they come both with and without SO's. It is believed that they'll do it for the Touch models as well; I would expect that they'd also charge the difference in price, which is $40, based on the prices shown at Amazon.

All the private hospitals around me have wi-fi. I work in the "county" hospital. We don't, yet. The only places we don't want cell phones are the ICU areas due to all the machine signals. So, yes ask at the actual hospital.

On a separate but related note, my K2 more than paid for itself when my Husband was hospitalized a few months after I got it. He was supposed to be in for 2 days. He was in for 5. Yes, the hospital did have a wifi network. No, I never needed to figure out how it worked or call for a password during the 15 seconds twice a day that line was open.
I love my Kindle. I love my 3g. I ordered a 3g touch with special offers on announcement date. I paid for expedited shipping. November 22 can't get here soon enough. A technophobe relative who has spent too much time at a hospital beside lately is waiting in line for my K2.

Gee, I am glad to be proved wrong. So if I had 3g on my Kindle, of which I do not, could I use local cell towers to link to my home network?

No. If you have a kindle that has both a WiFi and 3G receiver, you could download books wirelessly via either method. The cell network the 3G uses is ATT. When you turn on wireless, it will look first for a WiFi network and connect to that if one is open. Otherwise it will connect via 3G to ATT's wireless network. When it does THAT, Amazon is paying the data charges for you. In my case, I have WiFi at home. So when I turn the Kindle on here, it rarely uses 3G, because I've taught it my home network credentials. Occasionally it will be 3G for a few seconds if it has a hiccup in connecting to the WiFi but then it switches over as soon as it is able. When I'm out and about, it will use WiFi networks that are open at restaurants or something. But if they require log in info and I don't want to go to the trouble to enter that, it just switches to 3G. I can, though, enter it and then it will use the Wifi network. I've set it up for places that I figure to be with some frequency, but not places that I visit once and are not likely to be back to.

Gee interesting ann I did not know any of this and I am glad to add to my fund of knowledge. I avoided the 3g when I bought my Kindle some months ago, I guess that I am going to need to reconsider my decssion.

I just bought the 3g keyboard with ads. I don't particularly care for the ads (really the only one that is a bother is the one on the home page down at the bottom. It takes up about 2 lines and I'd probably have been happier without it). The 3g works well and was worth it for me because I'm not always around wifi. I have used the experimental browser. It can take some patience. Since I am aware Amazon is paying the bill, I don't overdo using it (I don't want them to take it away or start charging for it--which would be well within their right!) It's a great little machine so far.

In fact, on the Touch 3G, the browser use will be limited when connected via 3G vs. Wifi.

...a group of us were thinking of getting him a Kindle, for when he gets out. It would appear the hospital policies concerning wi-fi/3G are a non-issue.
