Do you use it at all?
It's actually better than I expected. It can't replace a proper audio book, of course - human voice with proper inflections and emoting is something computers just can't get down. But it does work in a pinch.

I don't have it available on either of my K's, but many members do use it...

My mom uses it all the time. I never use it. I have friends that use it for editing.

I use it on my KDX everyday. On the weekends, I listen to samples of books, to see if I am going to want to read the book. During the week, I listen to my books while getting ready, while standing. When I sit, I read the book. I love the TTS, even though it's not perfect. I finish more books.

its not bad for nonfiction that I want to listen to while doing something. I have some history books that went pretty well that way....don't think I could use it for nonfiction

I like using it. After staring at a computer screen all day my eyes get tired but I still want to read my books. Some of if sounds kinda funky at times but I'm glad the feature is there. Really considering getting the Touch since it's smaller and still has the TTS.

I had to commute last week, sixty-three miles each way.
I piped my Kindle TtS through my car stereo's aux... it was weird but doable. Otherwise, nah.

I have friends that use it for editing. Now that's a good idea - I should give that a try. Though I imagine it does take quite a while.

I love TTS and use it all of the time. It's a huge reason why I upgraded from my K1 to the K3. It's not perfect but also sometimes very entertaining.

You can increase the playback speed which may make it more feasible for editing

I find the female voice pleasant enough and because of this feature, also get other things done. This is an important feature to me and one I hope is been more improved with the new Touch.
Dose anyone know if Amazon modified this feature?

I once tried recording the output of the Kindle TTS at high speed into my computer, saved that as an Mp3 and played in on my iphone, if you put it in as a podcast on your iphone, you can doublespeed that as well. So 4x speed was pretty chipmunky

I use it on long drives in the car. When there's nothing to listen to on the radio, I use my Kindle to play podcasts or to do text to speech. It's not great, but it's not bad. I find the female voice carries over the engine noise of the car pretty well. Plug the Kindle into the car stereo and I'm ready to go. I do wish the audio output of the Kindle was louder though, I have to have the Kindle and the stereo set to maximum.

My car's old enough that the stereo doesn't have a line-in jack, so I use an iGriffin radio, and (usually) get pretty good results.

I use it. I have an hour-long commute each way so I listen to a lot of audio books. The first time I used TTS to listen to a book was when I ran out of audio book CDs. It was better than I expected. I have also used it to see how it pronounced unusual words or names. I wish the Kindle had a least one more lower volume level choice as I sometimes use the TTS when I am trying to get back to sleep. I plug in earphones but then leave them on my pillow. I am usually back to sleep in less than 10 minutes. (I use a book I have already read for this purpose so I won't stay away wondering what happens next. )

Is test to speech a feature that's available on every Kindle (including the new Fire?), or is it an app you have to pay for?

It's available on the Touch and Keyboard. Fire is a slightly different animal as it's really a reading optimized tablet rather than a dedicated reader, but I expect it will have something like it as well. It is NOT available on the Basic K4.

It is NOT available on the Basic K4. It's not on any of the various Kindle phone/tablet apps, either. Which is sad...it'd be cool if you could get your iPod Touch to read a book at you.

And this is what makes me wonder if it will be available on the Fire. Waiting to see... Betsy
