Power Adaptor Specs

Greetings -- What are the specs for the power adaptor?  Can I buy an equivalent replacement at any good electronics store eg Radio Shack or Best Buy?  Or does it have to be a Kindle product?

I’ve been involved with several discussions on this subject on various boards, and I’ve talked with a buddy of mine who has designed battery chargers for a Fortune 500 company and his opinion is not to use anything that isn’t advertised to work with the Kindle. You could seriously damage the Kindle and/or its battery. Chargers are very specific as to type of battery (NiCad vs. Lithium Ion, etc.), and is frequently specific to battery size (and the Kindle uses a custom battery).

You could run into all sorts of symptoms, from under-charging to grossly over-charging and making the battery explode.

I wouldn’t risk it.

No, it does not have to be a Kindle product, but I would be careful. It is a fairly standard interface, and if you want another adapter, I highly recommend the iGo, available in lots of places including Amazon and RadioShack. The iGo adapter has various interchangeable tips, there are tips for literally every small device out there. I have tips for my Kindle, Sony camera, iPods, Palm Treo, Nintendo DS, and old unused Motorola Razr.

The charger package I purchased has two cords, and can power two devices simultaneously. It has connectors for standard outlets, auto and airplane. It is the only thing I take when I travel. The tips are sold separately, and run from about $3 to $12 depending on where you get them. I have so many of the little tips that I have labeled them for each device.
