Kindle 1 can be used with Prime Lending Library, which I believe you're asking about since you mentioned joining Prime. However, there are some differences from the later Kindles.
In all cases, the Prime Lending Library books must be downloaded from the Kindle; that is, you must navigate to the desired book from the Kindle Store option on the Kindle, and then click on "borrow." Once that is done, it will be in your Amazon library and can also be downloaded to other Kindles.
The difference with the Kindle 1, at least so far, is that while later generation Kindles have the option to go to a special section of only Prime Lending Library books, on the K1, you can only browse the books mixed in with the non-Prime books, so it's better to browse online on your computer (there's a search that one can do), determine the book you want, and then search for that book in the Kindle store from your Kindle. Or, when you find the book online with the computer, send a sample to your Kindle. Open the sample on your Kindle to get to the book's product page and then borrow it.
Hope this helps.
