I got Amazon's kindle lighted cover on Wed. The light did not work. Defective. I called CS this morning before going out I had about a half hour. Well, it took over 20 min's & then I was going to have to talk to a technical CS. I told him that I would call back. He said only 5 min's. I said yes, but then I was told that we were leaving, so I hung up. I called back when I got home. After going thru the process again with the CS & then the Technical guy, I will get a replacement by the end of next month. Great! Then tonight, I see that amazon is charging my CC $1.00. I check my orders at amazon & my email. NOTHING? OMG, it could be identity thief. I make my 3 rd call to CS. After another long phone call & asking the same question numerous times, I found out that amazon charged me an authorization fee....to see if I was who I said. After asking if they do that to everyone who gets defective products, she said sometimes. I then asked more questions. The do that to people who change their CC. I never did! I told her that all they had to do was look at my account & see that I had ordered the cover to begin with. I should be charging amazon for sending me a defective cover. I had also told her during my questioning that I want to know so that I can tell the people at my kindle groups. Talk about scaring me & adding insult to injury.

<<I've edited the subject to reflect that, one way or another, the issue has been resolved.  They have agreed to credit the $1 but it likely was just an authorization that would have been removed once the cover was shipped.  Let us know if you have any more issues with this.  Smiley  --Betsy>>

It's just an authorization. It will drop off, most likely, and not actually post to your account. Just FYI. They do that to verify addresses and such.

A $1.00 charge for validation is done all the time but people usually don't notice.  It should disappear....

Thanks for letting me know, but I did ask that question,  & CS girl said that they will refund me, leaving me feeling that I was going to get charged. The CS girl even asked for the telehone number of my CC to call them to get an immediate refund at the end of the conversation. Now that I know what you all have told me, I wish the CS girl had told me that.

I'd guess that the CS rep was trying to expedite the removal of the fee rather than just letting nature take it's course, as it were.  She may have thought she WAS explaining the authorization thing to you but for whatever reason, communication was just not happening.

As others have said, it's pretty standard, (she might have thought you knew that and were simply looking to have it removed quickly) but if it's the first time you've returned something, or happened to look at your CC statement at just the right time, I can see why it was a concern! Shocked

Anyway, it's sorted. Cheesy  Take a deep breath. . .it'll be fine.

Thanks Ann. Yes, it will be my 1st return. Smiley I have been very fortunate. I check my CC's daily. The charge is still there, but at least I know it's legit, & not identity theft.
