Don't get me wrong, I love the silver/gray color of the new kindle but kind of miss the white. When I picture a kindle that's what pops to mind..white plastic. I wonder did the white k3 not sell as well as the graphite? Apple doesn't seem to be abandoning the white ipod/ipad/iphone. Should amazon do away with the white kindle?

Although I like choice, I also know that it's tough for Amazon and local stores to stock all the different models of the kindle - with or w/o 3G, with or w/o special offers, Touch vs. non-touch(K4), etc. And they are still selling the K3. I think the white K3 was kind of a transition, and a way for Amazon to see what is preferred. Now that the K4/Touch has come out, not in white, I think it's clear to people who do like white that this (the remaining white K3s) is their last chance to get one.

So, I can see both sides of the argument. There are always skins for those who want more choices. I do have both a white and graphite K3 because... well, no reason other than sentimentality for the white, as you said.

I think most of the stores are stocking the Special Offer Kindles. At least the stores by me are all selling the SO only.

My retentive side likes all the same color, but Amazon has forced me out of my comfort zone and now I have 2 graphite and 1 white Kindles...

But all of them have Decalgirl Burlwood skins and Oberon covers :-)

Amazon now has 3 different models of Kindles on top of the K3, so I understand why they wouldn't want to offer them all in two different colors.  That is just too many different casings to produce and still keep the price down.

Apple only has to produce two different types of casings for each device and they charge $$$$ for the pleasure of owning their product.

My theory is that they wanted to switch to 'not white' . . . possibly in response to customer feedback.  So when the K3/Keyboard came out they had the two colors. . . .and they subsequently found that the darker color sold better.  So when they were introducing the 4th Gen Kindle and the Touch, they didn't bother with the option.

I have the white K3 and love it. I decided to buy the Kindle Touch and I was a little disappointed they didn't offer white. I always use a skin so it really doesn't matter what color it is.

Or chili. Chili and a white Kindle does not a happy combination make.

I hated the white Kindle. I just think white plastic looks cheap to me. The first thing I did with my K2 was skin it. With my new Touch I have no intention of skinning it.

I love the new color!

I found the white distracting, and it lessens the perceived contrast of the e-ink screen. Plus, as noted, it shows dirt pretty easily, even without Italian food, chili, and cheetos. Or chocolate.  Grin

I can't say I miss it, though I did still skin my Touch. Like Ann, I suspect that the graphite Kindles sold better, and Amazon's decided to stick with the darker tones because of that.

I wonder if that is because you can buy the SO, even if you don't want SO (like me) and just go to Amazon and buy out of it? It is an easy way to save shelf space.

I have no problem with white, and it does not look cheap, plasticky, or mess with my reading experience.  It is in a case and is not allowed to get dirty; I usually don't eat anything while reading so it's never been exposed to food.  Woops, forgot: it's a K2.  I have nothing against the silvery ones that are out now, except for the $260 I already spent on mine, plus 2 cases and a silicone skin.

Agreed.  I hate white gadgets.  That's part of the reason I upgraded to a K3--much prefered the graphite color!  Would like it even better if they made a black model!

I miss the iconic white, but I understand why they went to one color scheme. I had thought about trading my graphite K3 for a white, but that would just be trying to recapture the look of the K2 I originally fell in love with. I'm not going to become a Kindle collector, but I will probably buy a used K2 eventually for nostalgic reasons.

As long as it has a matte finish, fingerprints wouldn't be an issue.

But yeah, glossy black surfaces due show them bad--like the black bezels on my iPhone and iPad!  Thankfully I'm not too OCD about that as I like the black and really find the white Bezel on iPhones/iPads very distracting personally (my girlfriend has a white iPad).

I hope Kindles stay matte no matter their color. I had the original Nook for a little while and the shiny black frame around the screen drove me nuts. I sit on the couch to read with the ceiling fan on. I could see the pulsating reflection of the fan in the frame.

That's not a bad idea, especially if you've never done it before. What's really nasty is when you get them on perfectly, save for a single hair on the center of the screen...

I wish I had a darker Kindle. I have the original KDX, and I found that it dirties easier. I suppose it helps that I have a skin on it, but regardless, I would have liked the darker one. If I have to choose white vs. black, I always go for black.

I hated the white. It looked cheap and plasticky-almost toy-like. Plus the dark color really makes the screen look even more gorgeous.

Love my white K1.  Love my graphite K4.   But I have to say, I never thought much about what color a gadget was as long as it did cool stuff. Cheesy

I love my gadgets and I have black, white and in between. The color is not a determining factor when I buy. It is nice to have a choice though.

Like and I-phone the white color might be cool to the consumer.  Golf drivers have gone the same way.  White was the hot item in 2011 for Drivers.
