In a recent NY Times article, it was mentioned that Google would soon start selling ebooks.  They are giving the publisher freedom to set the price -- something which Amazon Kindle reserves for itself.  If this happens, I imagine the publisher will go for the higher price and switch to Google for their ebook publishing.  I see much higher prices out of this.  Too good to last.

The publisher sets the price on amazon, too.  Amazon can discount it if they wish (as can all retailers), but the discount will come out of amazon's portion of the profit.  I can't imagine why publishers wouldn't want to sell on as many platforms as possible.

We had another thread on this.

Anyway I'm not worried. There are already multiple ebook dealers, 1 more isn't going to result in Amazon being out of business.

I agree, let Google come into the fray.  I think competition drives ingenuity and creativity.

As long as they don't go proprietary and use one of the established formats, there are converters out there that will easily convert a book to Kindle's format or to Mobi.
