Hi all, just got a kindle from amazon as a gift for my dad. Opened it up to check it was working etc, didn't realise that what I saw on the screen about plugging it in and powering up etc was actually the kindle display and not on the protective film!

Anyway long story short i powered it up and now when i turn it off or sleep, it shows either the screensaver or blank screen,.

How do i get it to show the initial instructions again, and launch into the quick setup guide so my dad will be greeted by this when he opens the box?

That same information should be in the little brown inset.  If you reset to factory defaults, that screen doesn't come back, but the first thing that will be there when he powers it on (after the screensaver) will be the User's guide tutorial on how the touch screen works, which is a nice welcome.

Is it a Touch?  On a Touch, to restore to factory defaults, tap on "Menu" in the top menu on the home page, then "Settings."  Then tap on "Menu" again in the top menu, and select "Reset to Factory Defaults."

You will get a warning message that this action will remove all downloaded or transferred content from your Kindle.  You wills till be able to download archived items.  Do you want to reset your Kindle?  No/Yes"  Select "Yes."

The Kindle will flash and you'll get a message "Please wait a moment whie your Kindle stars up" on the Kindle "tree" screen, and it will flash again, then turn dark.  Be patient.  The tree screen will reappear with a progress bar.  Then flash again.  And the Kindle User's Guide will be up with "Tip 1 of 3" and the picture of the tap zones.

Let me know if you need to figure it out for a different Kindle.

This is what I would do....

Hi thanks for your reply. It's a refurbished keyboard (refurbished and sold to me by amazon itself), and doesn't have any literature with it at all, so now when he opens the box, there isn't even anything to tell him how to turn the unit on, I'm going to have to show him I guess.

Hmmmm...

You could print out the quick start guide, it's available as a PDF on Amazon's site and include it in the packaging.  Be right back with a link.

Here's the link for the PDF:
http://kindle.s3.amazonaws.com/Kindle_6inch_Quick_Start_Guide.PDF

Pages 2 and 3 are the overview...

Does the K have a Welcome Letter on it?

Thanks for the link.

The only thing that came was a box, inside the box was the kindle covered in protective film, and behind the kindle is a wee box with the usb lead. That's all there is.

The screen of the kindle initially had instructions on how to plug in the usb lead and power the unit on, but since I turned it on, this doesn't come back. I can either have it with a screen saver or blank screen.

I may just print off the manual and put it in the box too. I thought it would have been an easy fix to get that welcome screen back but alas. That'll teach me to mess with presents I buy for people lol.

Yeah, that initial screen is never seen again once you've powered it up the first time. . .there must be a way to reset it to that, since you bought a refurb, but not something a user can do.  You might ask Kindle CS, though. . . .

I seem to remember this being discussed in the past, and we came to the conclusion that you couldn't get it back again.

No need to print the whole manual, it should be on the Kindle in a Kindle version.  But page 2 is the info on charging.  You could print that out on nice paper....
