I got a Kindle Touch a couple of days ago and I'm wondering since then whether the micro USB plug is supposed to be slightly wobbly when connected to the device or whether my Kindle is defective. The connection between plug and Kindle is firm (it needs some effort to connect or disconnect it) but when plugged in the plug is a little wobbly - as if the socket in the device would not be completely fixed but slightly movable.

Is this normal or did I get a defective Kindle?

Thanks and greetings - desertman.

Does it quit charging if you hold it one way or another or wiggle it?

The thing I don't like about USB connections that are too tight is that you get into the habit of having to exert more force and if you're not paying attention you could try and insert the USB connector the wrong way and with enough force, end up breaking something.

Actually, it's probably the cord itself- chances are good anyway. I've demolished about four or five of them, and they always get loose feeling prior to barely working. If it won't register the thing is plugged in due to the wobble, try wrapping it around the Kindle with some tension- pushing up on it usually helps. Or down, as the case may be. If you don't have an extra cord, that is.

I'm sure it's possible it's the Kindle itself, but every time I've freaked out thinking that I broke the Kindle's socket, it's been the cord.

I think it's likely fine and is probably the plug and not the port on your device. The plug that came with my kindle fire is the same way, slightly wobbles when I plug it in, but when I use the plug that came with my kindle keyboard on my fire, it's more snug. As long as it stays in fine and charges fine, I wouldn't be concerned.

I just chatted with the Amazon customer support and will get a new Kindle - it's actually already on its way. Thanks, Amazon!

BTW: The metal pin that sticks out of the bulky white plastic piece at the end of the cable is not loose within that plastic piece. It seems to be the receptacle that is loose within the Kindle.

Ah, I see. If the receptacle itself on your kindle is loose you definitely would not want to keep it. I'm glad you're getting another. Smiley

I just got the Touch I ordered for my mom today and noticed the same thing.  The plug fits in tight (you feel it slide in as you push it) but when seated all the way in it still can wiggle, especially side to side.  The charge light stays on while wiggling.

The USB cable that came with my K3 Kindle Keyboard was loose like that too. I replaced the cable with this Mediabridge - USB 2.0 A-Male to Micro-B Cable (6 Feet), and it works much better! It fits snug and doesn't wobble at all.

In my experience, all USB cables are loose. That's just the way they're made.

It should have a little bit of play in it, but not be so lose its almost falling out. If it fails be be detected tho, then there probably is a problem that needs looking into by Amazon!

Mine is loose. I noticed it but wasn't concerned. It has no problem charging.

Thanks!  Since it is charging with no problems even when I wiggle it I'm going to assume it is within normal standards.  The touch is for my mom and I want to be sure it is working perfectly so she doesn't have any problems.  The bonus is I get to play with it and decide if the touch is what I want when I upgrade my K2.

My Kindle touch cord doesn't wiggle, but my k3 one did.  The K3 one worked fine, however,  and still does. My daughter uses the k3 now.

Try a different cable.  MicroUSB was specifically designed so that all the parts that wear due to repeated insertion and removal are part of the cable and not the device.  Standard and MiniUSB were the opposite, and ports on devices were prone to wearing out.  Since all the moving parts (the springs and hooks that make a solid contact) are in the cable, most connection issues will be resolved by replacing the cable with a new/different one.

The cable and kindle are both brand new and official Amazon items so I don't think that is the problem, but thanks for the suggestion.

I've noticed the same thing. Much looser, compared to my k3.
