Today my kindle 3G (k3) died. It fell onto the gravel driveway and the screen was frozen on screensaver, and soon the image appeared fractured even though no cracks could be seen or felt in the screen. contacted square trade, they said send it in, and how do I want my reimbursement.   I tried to get to the book I was reading on my husband's ipad, but it didn't show up in the archive. Are all the books that were on my kindle lost?Huh That's a LOT of books (and money). How can I get to them? The book appears when I check on manage my kindle.  I haven't deregistered it yet, it's in the box waiting to go to ups tomorrow. It's bad enough my faithful kindle is gone, but  not all the books too!
I want to replace it asap, but I had wanted a kindle fire- but only as a companion to my kindle 3g. I don't like that the fire doesn't have text to speech- I use that sometimes while driving. Not sure what to get.

All books you got from Amazon are in your archive. If you got any somewhere else, you might be able to get them from there. Smashwords lets you get any book you bought in the past. Is your husband on the same account? If he has a separate account, your book wouldn't show up on his Kindle for iPad app.

As RM Reed says, is your husband's Kindle for iPad app registered to your account?  If you go to Manage Your Kindle, pick "Manage Your Devices" on the left.  Scroll past the actual Kindles and you should see a list of the Registered Kindle Reading Apps.  Is your husband's iPad's app listed there?  It probably will be listed as Kindle for iPad and type Apple iOS.

If it's not there, his iPad would need to be deregistered from the account its on and registered to your account for you to read your books.

Did you try calling Amazon about your Kindle?  Often they will replace Kindles with cracked screens.

If you have books from other sources, you  can plug in the Kindle with your USB cable to your computer.  Hopefully, it will be recognized.  Then copy the "Documents" file to your computer or a thumb drive as a back-up.
The non-Amazon books can then be copied to your new Kindle.

First:  have you contacted Kindle CS?  What did they say?  Though you have a Square Trade warranty, it is worth it to ask Amazon because they are very good about replacing -- it makes sense:  you won't buy books if you've nothing to read them on!  Normally they send a replacement immediately after you talk to them, and then send you a shipping label you can print to send the damaged device back to them. If you have not contacted Kindle Customer Service you should do so before doing anything else!

(This is if you are in the US.  If you are not, the process might be somewhat more cumbersome. In that case Square Trade might be the better way to go.)

Second:  as has been noted your books are NOT gone.  Everything you bought from Amazon is stored there.  You can easily download it to another device if that device is registered to the account.  You can get the app for your computer, either Mac or PC, or for any of several portable devices.  The key is that those devices are registered to the same account as the one where the damaged kindle is.

Third:  Whether you are sending the broken one back to Amazon or to Square Trade for reimbursement, you should deregister it first. Sounds like it's completely unusable, but it's a good idea just in case.  You can do that from "Manage Your Kindle".

Yes, everything you bought from Amazon is in your Archive.  Also, since this fall, everything you have emailed to Kindle is in your archive.  Everything else should be on the computer where you originally downloaded it and transferred it over to your Kindle.  There are two reasons why a book you see in your archive isn't available on your Husband's Ipad.  First, as mentioned above, your Husband's Ipad may be registered to a different account.  Second, your Husband's Ipad is running the Kindle App, and the Kindle App can't access so-called personal documents from your archive.  So, anything you emailed to your Kindle by way of your archive can only be accessed by a true Kindle not the app.

I'll note that the OP did say that the one book she's specifically interested in was in her Amazon "Manage Your Kindle" archive and hence purchased through Amazon, but good advice all around for any books she may have purchased, etc, through other sources.

Not necessarily, Betsy.  If it was emailed to Kindle in the last few months, it will still be classified as a personal document; but it will be in the archive.  That does not change the fact that apps can't access personal docs.  That is a recent change (good and bad in my opinion) to the way Amazon treats docs emailed to Kindle.  I have now emailed myself all the books (arguably not very many) that I have bought elsewhere so that I can delete and recover them directly from Kindle.  I've checked it, it does work.  I have also checked that even though they are in my archive, the app on my Blackberry can't see them or download them.

I'll note that the OP did say that the one book she's specifically interested in was in her Amazon "Manage Your Kindle" archive and hence purchased through Amazon, but good advice all around for any books she may have purchased, etc, through other sources.

Fair point; as she didn't mention a personal document but a book in Manage Your Kindle, I assumed it was a purchased book, not a book sent as a personal document, which might not be the case.  Although, playing the odds, I still expect she meant a purchased book Wink, but including the Personal Docs archive would be a more complete answer.

thanks for the suggestions. I didn't try Amazon CS although I've had nothing but terrific service (my kindle was over a year old, and it fell off my car and got ran over), I just used the squaretrade warranty and got fully reimbursed within a day.
I went back and forth, but the draw of the fire was too great. Now that I've played with it, I sort of miss my e-ink kindle. My internet isn't fast enough to enjoy the movies or tv programs. I do like the scanner radio app, and plants vs zombies. I've checked my email and sent a message, everything seems easy enough. But I prefer typing on a keyboard, so usually check my email at home. I did try it out at my parents' house, they have cable internet, and it was great to watch a movie, and the apps downloaded so quickly. I'm in a rural area so don't have many options for internet. So I'm a little lukewarm about the fire; I enjoy being able to read at night without needing a light, but do miss the lightweight and e-ink of my old kindle.

If you really don't like the Fire and would prefer to get an e-ink Kindle, you can return it for a refund:-
