Just bought my first Kindle (the 79 dollar with special offers) and am enjoying it so far. Haven't read as much in the week since I got it, but I anticipate doing so.
Also bought the Deft Poe case which is pretty neat and was only like 8 bucks or so on Amazon.
Figured I'd sign up over here since I am now a proud Kindle owner! lol
Eventually would like to get the Kindle Fire, as I have Prime and could watch the videos on there.

Welcome. I have the 3g with Keyboard and ads. I sat next to a guy on a plane a few days ago and he had the 79 dollar one. It is lighter than my keyboard one and a bit smaller (thinner too). He showed me the spiffy keyboard and demo'd typing on it. Other than those things, the 79 dollar one is a lot like mine. Spiffy!!!

Paying close attention to the IT community and there opinions they have said that the three best non-apple tablets are:
1) Loveno X221 2) Asuss Eee Pad 3) Amazon Kindle Fire
Thus I am trying to figure out how much dollars I can spend on this at the moment. The loveno cost over $1K and costs too much, the Eee pad is around $600 and will get my business if I can get that much, if I can't it will be the Kindle Fire.

Congrats on the new Kindle. My family is a multi-Kindle one. K2, K3 & now the Fire. Love the Fire but still prefer reading on the K3. Have fun with the new Kindle! Sandy P.S., and welcome aboard

Welcome to the ebook revolution! Ever since I first got a kindle I've been reading much more than I ever did with paper books. Did you know that you get a free book every month if you are on "prime"? I'm not a prime member, so i don't know how it works, but you get a free lending library book every month, apparently.

Yes, Amazon Prime members can borrow one book from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library once a month. Prime members also get free two-day shipping with no minimum order size and unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows with Prime instant videos. There are currently 51,485 books to choose from (and growing) in the Kindle Owners' Lending Library. And here is a link to the Amazon Prime page where you can sign up for a one-month free trial to try it out. Just be sure to cancel before the free trial is over if you don't want to continue for $79 a year (less for college students). Kindle Fire owners get a one-month free trial automatically. Most public libraries also have free Kindle ebook lending through Overdrive. You can get more information on the library's website. There are also thousands of free books at Amazon! You can find the classics here. And here's one way to find free recent releases: http://www.ereaderiq.com/free/. The books that were made free most recently are shown first, and most of those are free for only a limited time so be sure to double-check prices before "buying" with one-click. Have fun reading!

I'm excited because I'm getting one for Christmas - but a lot more expensive in the UK compared to the US. £89.

Not really handy with the exchange rate, but it's still a lot more expensive considering that it's the no-ad model and the American price is VAT-less?

$1 = ~ £0.65
The non SO price of the K4 in the US is $109. That equates to about £71. Then you add VAT (included in the stated price) which the US does not have (though some states have sales tax which is added on at purchase). I believe the current VAT rate is 20% so that brings it to £85.
So. . . .comparable.
In the US a person in a state with sales tax would pay anywhere from $113 to $119 (which would equate to £73-£77) depending on the state's rate.
