I've had both the Kindle and Nook Apps on a Netbook PC and an iPod Touch for 6 months to a year. I have purchased books from both vendors.
In the past, I rejected e-ink readers based on in store demos that turned pages slowly and seemed to have very dark screens. When I saw the current generation Kindle, it seemed to be much more responsive and and the screen looked easy to read. So I started to get more interested in e-ink in general.
What actually pushed me into getting a Kindle was finding out that the local library now supports Kindle format downloads. The ease of use in borrowing and loading books is fantastic. Nook is supported also, but needs another program on the PC, registration with Adobe and then transfer from PC to ereader. The Kindle format downloads straight to any of my reading devices.
Between the library selection, occasional freebies and some classics, I could get by with never buying a book again. (But I probably will buy for certain authors/titles I really want to read).
I'm seriously considering getting Amazon Prime, mostly for the video streaming, the ebook lending library would be a small bonus.

I really wanted something I could put documents on so I didn't have to read them on a computer screen. I use the free kindle conversion email service all the time.

Back in 2008 there was only Sony and the kindle. Also there was the fact it was a Christmas gift and when the family offered a ereader to me I wanted the one with wireless considering how much time I spent on campus

I procrastinated for a long time waiting for a single standard format. I decided it wasn't going to happen and got a Kindle because of the availability of books. I am usually in Mexico and for 14 years I read what I could find and now I can read what I want.

To be honest the main reason I didn't even look at the Nook was the trademarked open spot in the bottom left corner of the reader. Then the people at work let me use all their Kindles and from there it was just a matter of time.

I actually chose the Nook first because I could see one in person. You still had to order a Kindle from Amazon to see one. I read ereader forums voraciously and it just seemed that, on paper, I would like the Kindle better. I took the chance and ordered a Kindle knowing I could easily return it if I didn't like it. I returned the Nook.

I honestly can't recall what was on the market for ereaders (besides sony and maybe B&N's nook?) when I got my first kindle (a K2US) in '09, but what sold me was the ease of use, amount of books, prices of books, and the contrast on the eink display.
I have played with other ereaders before, and while it's largely a matter of preference, I have been nothing but happy with all my Kindles. The outstanding CS is a great bonus too.

Well, when I got my K2, it was that or the Sony (no Nook out yet) and for me it was a no brainer- I like some obscure authors, so Amazon it was for the selection available.
I like Amazon's CS too- they've amazed me a few times with how responsive they are. That has made me pretty unlikely to switch formats.
Oh, and the Whispernet too. That's awesome. I have downloaded books in the airport in Costa Rica which is amazingly great.
