Does anyone know, if you put the Touch in a bag -- either a Ziploc bag or a purchased plastic cover -- to protect it from sand and water at the beach does the Touch screen still work? Please provide details. Thanks...

Also, anyone put a screen protector on their screen? Again, does that affect the Touch functionality?

I have my waterproof cover that I bought for my first Kindle. I try and find it for you tonight andl test it out for you. I know it is in one of our numerous boat bags because I use when we are out on the boat. Hopefully, it is in the house. Smiley

I think someone posted that it wouldn't work in a ziplock bag--I recall a post complaining about not being able to use it in the bathtub because of that.

Not sure about screen protectors.  IMO screen protectors are a waste on anything.  Maybe if you have kids using the device or something.  Otherwise just get a case that covers the screen to protect it when not in use and it should be fine.  I never put screen protectors on any of my gadget.  Too much of a pain to get on, and tend to make the screen look worse (though probably not much of an issue with an e-ink device vs. a color lcd screen on a phone or tablet).

Just tried mine in a ziplock bag, it seeemed to work fine.  Both taps and swipes worked.  This was a fridge-weight bag, not a freezer weight.  I'm going to go get my waterproof pouch I bought for the K1 and test it, Leslie.

Leslie,

tried it in my DryPak, and it worked too.  I think the only problem is that the bag itself can touch the screen and cause a page turn.  But I think I could control that if I wanted to read in the tub.  An occasional false turn wouldn't be a problem.

As for screen protectors, I don't have any on any of my devices...

Kathy,

I'll be interested in hearing what your experience is with this compared to mine.

I have a screen protector (Boxwave anit-glare) on my ipad and it doesn't affect the touch screen on it. I have also purchased the same screen protector for my kindle touch, but since it is under the Christmas tree, I haven't had a chance to try it out. One thing I really like about these screen protectors is they make fingerprints and smears much less noticeable.

I'm bummed. I get home to test with my brand new Kindle Touch that is out for delivery, but no KT yet. We usually get deliveries by 3:00pm. Hopefully it gets here today. I'm not sure hoe late they deliver but if it doesn't come today I'm going to be so disappointed. I guess I'll find my case so that I'll be ready to test. I'm hoping it works because I like to take it with me on the boat.

Sorry this is OT but I have to say " I'm not sure hoe late they deliver" I had to laugh!
It's Christmas time, they probably have way more packages to deliver the usual and they will deliver pretty late if they have to, I've had stuff delivered as late as 9 during holiday seasons before!

I'm just impatient. On a good note I found my Trendy Digital water guard carry case, so I'll test it as soon as possible.

Just FYI.  The Kindle Touch screen isn't glossy like the iPads, so it doesn't really show finger prints anyway.

Totally different type of touch screen tech two.  The Kindle uses lasers on top of the glass to detect touches, where as the iPad has a capacitive touch screen that measures electrical current in the finger tips through sensors under the glass.

Seems to me my K-Touch "Buffy" arrived a bit later than usual last Friday, Kathy!  Keeping my fingers crossed.  Does the tracking still show delivery today?  I'm betting it gets here.  I've had deliveries during the holidays as late as 7PM.

Betsy

It says "Out for Delivery". It has been that way all day. My husband has been home most of the day and he hasn't seen it. They always in the past just left it at the door. I've never had to sign for it. Also for packages I needed to sign for they left a note so I don't think they have been here. I have my fingers crossed that it will get here tonight.

Unfortunately, they don't change that until it's actually delivered.  I guess they can't really give the exact location of the truck at all times, though I always wish for that when I'm waiting for something.  Grin  The days I'm waiting for things, it says that from about 6:30 am until 3:30 pm or later...until the thing is actually delivered.  If there is no exception yet on yours, I would still expect it.

*fingers crossed*

I have screen protectors on everything, except for my Macbook Pro. I tend to toss things into my pocket, bag, bookbag, whatever. Thus, I am not a happy camper when I get a scratched screen, which is why I have them. If you're careful, it's less likely to happen, but people make mistakes.

I can see a use for them in that case.  I've very careful with my things and never just toss something like my iPad in a bag--it has a smartcover and goes in a neoprene sleeve and then in my bag.

I do just put my iPhone in my pants or jacket pocket, but I make sure there's nothing else in the pocket I carry it in.  I'm less anal about phones getting scratched anyway since they're more disposable and get upgraded every 2 years when up for a new contract discount anyway.

Hmmm...I wonder if the freezer weight differs from the fridge weight. Because freezer weight gave me all sorts of issues; random popups, page turns, etc.

I haven't tried the DryPak because it's big enough to hold the iPad (Betsy, remember when that was the only size that fit our Kindles? LOL), but I'll go grab it now and test it out.

Freezer weight is definitely heavier, and I could see where it could accidentally touch the screen and cause a page turn.  I folded the excess on both the large ziplock and the DryPak around the back of the device so it was a flat surface across the front.  As I said in my prior post, I think there could be an occasional pop up.  Maybe I'll take a hot soak tonight and try it out for real and let Leslie know.

Hmmm...got to reading this thread and went out to the kitchen. I put my Touch in a ziploc type (too cheap to buy Ziploc brand) and the touch screen worked fine. I am planning taking it to the beach next summer, so I'm glad!

The DryPak is even heavier weight though, and it doesn't cause as many issues. It's just too darn big though; we'd need to find a smaller one that still worked.

For the record, tried both right now--in the DryPak, both lying on my desk and with it folded back as Betsy describes, mine does mostly behave. It seems to take a bit harder push, but it does work.

In the Ziploc brand Quart size freezer bag, pulled tight, forget it. Most of the time, it didn't respond at all. Once it enlarged the font. Never did it actually turn a page. Weird that we get such inconsistent results!

Kathy, if yours does arrive & you do try the TrendyDigital, I'd like to hear results on that one too. If a smaller DryPak will work, I'm all over it. I did put Square Trade on mine and I am reading it sans any other protection in the tub, but I'd feel better if it had something on it.

I got it. Love it so far. I put in the Trendy Digital WaterGuard Carry Case and was able to turn pages easily. I'm still new at figuring out where to touch but didn't have problem. I may have had to touch a little harder but once I knew how hard to touch it just became natural. I was reading the manual and was even able to go to the home screen and reopen it. The case is a little big but I know it is waterproof so I'll figure it out before taking it on the boat. I didn't have it in a case because mine hasn't come yet. I may actually be able to keep it in the case folded back and use it.  I'll let you know when the case gets here.
