Hmmm, interesting.

A front light LED film for e-ink readers....  Basically like a screen protector that lights up.

Very nifty! Thanks for the link to that article. It'd be much handier than using a reading light.

That looks awesome. Hopefully will work as well as it looks, concerned how it would work with the touch screen tho.

The Fire will continue to be popular with the game playing, movie watching, email receiving, net surfing, and music listening folks. I don't think it was made for book-reading people anyway.

I'll be eagerly awaiting to see how this works in the wild if it ever arrives there. Of course, I already read in the dark. I turn a light on just like I used to do with paper books.

Agreed.  Even for those who can tolerate reading on an LCD screen, reading on the fire is weird since the screen is so narrow in portrait orientation and so wide in landscape.  Bugged me when I tried it in target compared to the 4:3 ratios of the iPad or e-ink Kindles.

In any case, this has a lot of promise IMO.  I hate fiddling with a reading light so I usually read on my iPad instead of my K3 if I'm in dim lighting conditions.  This looks like it could provide nice, even lighting across the whole screen which would be a huge improvement for e-ink devices in dim lighting conditions.

Sony had a light built into the frame of one of their models. . .this looks like it would work better.  Wonder if it can be an 'after market' item or would have to be built in. . . .hmmm. . . . .

I would love it if it were an after market add-on, I really don't want to buy yet another reader to have this functionality. Besides, I do well enough with the light case, it works for me and this wouldn't be a necessity, only a nice option.

This is too cool.  While it would not in itself make me buy another device just to read in the dark (I have the Fire and the iPad, and if necessary, the i'Touch and a netbook for that), I think it would be a great addition to an eInk device if it works as well as described.  One of the main negatives I hear about eInk devices is the necessity for a light.

(And no, jbc, as described, this isn't an accessory, it's something that would be a part of future eInk devices.  So LTK is the place for this, thanks!)

Which is valid, but also always sort of makes me chuckle. . .I mean, you need a light with a paper book too! Cheesy

The only thing I would worry about is that you will need to take the Kindle apart to use it. At least that is what I'm assuming looking at on this website. http://www.slashgear.com/flex-lighting-shows-off-integrated-light-for-ebook-readers-14202187/

Which is true.  But it's still a negative of e-ink vs. tablets for those who don't have issues reading on LCD screens.

I really think it's designed to be something integrated into the device when purchased . . . .maybe something that will ultimately be an option:  with or without integrated light.  Though it would be nice, I doubt it will be something that could be retrofitted to an existing device.

I assume it can be turned off. . .though the video doesn't show that very clearly. Undecided

Oh, I get it now.  At first, I thought it was something you could just stick on and peel off at will.  I thought that was the coolest thing ever.  Now it's just moderately cool Wink ...

Me too. I thought it stuck on the reading area and you could take it off and on. It will be interesting once they start marketing it.

This is brilliant. Being on the dark side myself I love the idea of both reading and being read in said dark. O how I love this reading revolution!

English is the river which courses through us all and though which we live every aspect of our lives. It is 'all a river should be', to lift a line from Cannery Row. If we English speakers are lucky in our language, then those of us who write in said language are doubly so. To be in the language, in the wordfall, is to be part of a great natural force. Yet we think little of it for the most part. Yet how would it be were it to crumble in us through injury or illness, or be ripped from us by forces malign? We must guard it well for it is our greatest inherited common wealth, this river which stretches into our past through time out of mind and which we have a duty to instill in our children. Blimy, now where did that come from? London calling.
