Doesn't surprise me as almost everyone asks me when I said I got a new Kindle "oh, did you get the Fire?", so they are definitely aware of the product line as opposed to before with "what's a Kindle?" There was also some hopeful "soo, what are you doing with your old one..."

It's important to recognize that one million sold does not necessarily mean one million new users. There are individuals on this forum who have upwards of 5 or 6 Kindles. I wonder if this figure includes the Best Buy and Target sales figures, if not then Amazon is really dominating the market, if so then one million is still a very impressive figure

I agree that a significant number of the purchasers may be people upgrading, but I think the percentage of Kindles that are heading for the back of closet or the recycle bin is small. The old kindles will go to children, spouses, parents, siblings, friends, or sold. So there will still be more Kindle users.

That is a truly impressive number. It's also exciting to see so many people embracing the "Kindle lifestyle."

That's a lot of Kindles, assuming that figure to be true.

You know amazon has been successful at selling the kindles when you hear a joke on a TV show something to the effect of "Don't you yearn for yesteryear when a kindle was something you did to a candle." And a nook was a hole in the wall, a mouse pad was where the cat chased the mouse, if you had a hard drive you got a hotel room and slept it off and a cursor got his mouth washed out with soap.

My assumption is that it is all streams.
I have gone from the only one I know that has a kindle to most people that I know that regularly read now have kindles. My mom and four other aunts now have ereaders. (one has a nook, rest are kindles). It seems like it is going to be a very popular christmas present.

If I can get my dad to use an ereader, then truly the electronic revolution has triumphed.

Well, my mother (who isn't into tech at all) is very tempted by my mini Kindle (I guess she found the keyboard on the KK intimidating). We already agreed that when she has finished the paper book she is currently reading she'll try my mini K and she's already ventured a 'And if I like it I'll buy my own'. My guess is she will.

My mother is getting a Baby K for Christmas. But she may upgrade because she keeps running for the Touch every time she goes to Target!

I've literally had something like 15-20 people per shift (which I have short shifts, so it's semi-impressive) asking me where the Kindles are in our store, and I frequently get to go swap departments to sell them. ^_^ So this doesn't surprise me at all.

I'm very surprised at amazons reluctance to release numbers at this point, it seems like it would be a huge bargaining chip AND with the fire developers want to know installed base to decide if they are putting money towards the projects.
Maybe this is the start of them releasing numbers.
And, I knew that the sub-$99 price was going to kick it up (not that the others aren't, but, well, you know! it's just more of an impulse buy than a major investment)

Amazon has very consistently refused to release sales numbers on any of the Kindles. So this information about 1,000,000 Kindles is the anomaly.

A strange collection of flash fiction dealing with the end of the world, or the beginnings of longer stories. A special treat for the fans at just 99 cents.

Yeah, I don't think that the Trib has any better idea how many Kindles are being sold/shipped than my cat does. Mike

Well, that's a bit more credible*. Besides, I forgot it was this close to Christmas. Mike * In general, I'd still believe my cat, though.

The Chicago Tribune piece attributed Amazon. . . .and, as posted, they did actually release the figure publicly. I don't see anything is changing about the release of specific sales numbers, though. I expect they just wanted to say something after the NYT piece that was really negative. I expect that, in fact, they're selling well more than a million a week. And note they don't break down what sorts of Kindles they're selling. So that 1 million number is made up of Fire, Touch, Basic (the three they're currently really touting) as well as, no doubt, the Keyboard, DX, and possibly refurbished units sold via their Warehouse Deals. So, really, they still haven't given any hard numbers.

I think it's very interesting that Amazon is releasing any kind of sales figures on the Kindle... I think its an indication that the Kindle has officially moved from "crazy CEO project" to "We're the big kids on the block."

Kindles for everyone! (or at least e-readers for all?) Awareness and ownership of Kindles is way up in just the past 2 yrs. People have noticed my Fire and know what it is even. When I got my K2i 2 yrs ago, people would ask either - "what is it?" or "is it an iPad?"

OK, add me to the 1,000,000 for this week. I have a K2 that I've had since they were released, a Kindle Fire and just ordered a Baby K yesterday. It will be here tomorrow. We had Christmas Sunday night with my oldest son and his family, since they won't be here for Christmas day, and he gave his wife a Baby K. I got to play with it and immediately fell in love.
