I'm fairly new to Kindles. I like how it always remembers where you left off when you "open" a book. However, I have discovered that if you ever want go back (or forward) in a book, using the "search" function - it completely "forgets" where you were. There is no convenient way to navigate yourself back to where you left off before you got side-tracked in your "search". I find myself rapidly flipping through the pages to get where I left off. In other words, if you start navigating around in your book (i.e. doing a search) - it becomes difficult to find your place.

Do I manually have to set a bookmark before going off on a search?

As you suggested, you can bookmark your place or write down the location. If there's a better way, I don't know it.

You can always hit the 'back' key, but I'm not sure how many moves you can make and have that still work. You can also do a sync before you move, then as long as you don't search forward of that place, you can do a sync to furthest page read to get back there. Or, as you suggested yourself, there's always the bookmark feature.

If you're reading the kind of book that you want to dip in and out of at different locations - like a cook book - then bookmarking or using the table of contents, if the book has one, might be the best idea.

Whenever I leave my page in a book, I bookmark it.  I've found that back will often get me to my spot but not always.

Vlad is back, and this time he's hungry. I mean, really hungry. I could explain the plot of this one, but I think I'm going to eat, instead.  Steven Brust's synopsis of Druz.

I was playing around with X-Ray in a book last night and managed to click on an entry that took me almost to the end of the book.  "Shoot!!*" I thought, thinking that my Kindle now thought I was that far into the book and I hadn't noticed where I actually was before I started exploring.  It  surprised me that when I went back to my home page and re-opened the book, it took me to the page I'd been reading when I opened up Xray.  So, while "search" may over ride the last page read, X-ray doesn't.  Weird.

*Not the actual word  Grin
