Hello! I'm giving my daughter a Kindle for Christmas, and I'd like to pre-load it with a book. Is there any way to get it out of the box without actually ripping off that pull tab?

Yes and no. Register the Kindle to your Amazon account, and then buy a Kindle book on Amazon. When you open up the box you'll be able to "scan" for new and archived items, and she should be able to download straight to the Kindle (very quick). But there's no way, as far as I know, to have it directly on there.

Thanks... but will she be able to associate the Kindle with her own account later, if I've already registered it to mine? Or should I just set up an account in her name? (She's 12, she doesn't have one yet.)

If you reregister a Kindle, access is lost to the books in the Archive of the old account.  If you intend on being able to share purchased books, register it to your account.  If you want to keep her (child-safe) books separate, set up a separate account for her, then she can "inherit" it when she is older.

What I'd do is 'give' her a book.

You can't open the box without making it obvious you've done so.  If she's the sort that likes to have a fresh box, I'd not do that.  When she opens it, she can register it to her own account.  MEANWHILE, you can make a 'gift' of a book to her email address. . . .you can even set it to be delivered when you wish -- so schedule it for Christmas day.  She'll get an email with information on how to retrieve and download the book.  Though you sort of have to hope she doesn't check her email before she opens the kindle or the jig will be up!

Wait. . .better idea. . .we're talking about your minor daughter. Smiley  So go ahead and set up her account NOW and buy some books on it.  When she opens it and you help her register it the books will be ready to download.  AND, though it might currently have your email address on it, when she's old enough, she can switch it to hers and take it with her.  You need to specify a CC to start but can later fund it with gift cards so that she doesn't over spend.
