The things you see on the internet when you have insomnia!

http://www.woot.com/

This is the version with Pearl eInk.  If you order by Noon CST, my understanding is they guarantee delivery by Christmas.  As the subject says, it is a refurb.  I suspect it will sell out quick.  I didn't bite on Amazon's $259 offer for a new one, I'm being strong and not snapping this up, even though I'm tempted.

Revised 12/31, it appears the same deal is back.

In case anyone is interested, my DX Graphite has a whiter screen than my new Kindle Touch.  I would love to have another one as a back up, but just can't spend another $204.99 right now.  The DX Graphite is my favorite reader.  Great deal.

Just saw this. . . .no insomnia so I didn't get out of bed until a more human hour. Grin

here's the link -- this is TODAY, Dec 22 ONLY, and it says it will arrive in time for Christmas, which is pretty amazing.  Shipping is $5.  Excellent price, all things considered.  I'm actually debating jumping on this myself. They may not have too many. . . .

Sadly, this probably does mean that Amazon is phasing out the large eInk screen device. . . . . .Sad

Note that you must order by NOON Central Time for guaranteed delivery for Christmas.  After that, they say they'll ship it 'overnight' but don't guarantee it in time for Christmas.

Decisions, decisions. . .I totally don't need a DX. . . . .

I really feel the siren call to order one! But I honestly don't think I would like reading on it, both because of the weight and having page turn buttons on only one side. I will keep stalling till they sell out.

My sweet husband just bought me one! NEED is such an ugly word   Wink - no way I NEEDED this - but it should be great for reading at home. We got my husband one on Black Friday, and he loves it. BTW, Amazon has a good functional DX case by a company called CaseCrown for $15.18 with Prime available. We bought one for my husband's DX, and it looks good, especially for the price.

I won't need to purchase a case. . .I had a DX before with a basic padded case and also had an Oberon.  When I gave it to my Aunt last year, I included the basic padded case as the most practical for her.  When she died and the kindle got passed on to my other aunt, the case went with it.  Meanwhile, my brother also had a DX with the Amazon case.  When I gave my DX away I gave my Oberon to him and he left the Amazon case for me.  So I'll use that.

Oh, and, FWIW, they are still available. . . .order in the next hour for delivery by Christmas! Grin

Well....I waited all morning for them to sell out - but they haven't (yet), so I pressed the "ridiculously large button" to have one shipped to me.  I'm going to try to save it for the ds who is still in college - his birthday is in a couple of months.  Yep, I gonna try....

I've had my crisis, even got out my credit card at one point, but I put it back. I have no need or even serious want for a larger eink screen for reading, and my iPad is as good or almost as good at everything the DX can do. I won't be getting a DX. I continue to be amazed at the power of gadget lust over myself and others!

Weeeeelll.....  I always thought they were too heavy for just reading but probably great for people who need to carry around a lot of documents and stuff  --  i.e. not me.

So here I was feeling all smug that I can easily resist the lure of shiny new techno-toys even when on sale.

And then I saw this....

Unable to resist..between technical books and textbooks (wife is a Grad student, and I imagine I'll have to follow once she's done), this will be a godsend.

Didya HAVE to say that?  I'm starting grad school next term...  now I'm thinking about textbooks...  Aaaack!  Maybe I....  <cough>....  "need" one after all?

Three more hours...  can I resist that long?  (I did check, and at 9 PM Eastern there were still some available.)

When the DX originally came out, I thought I'd get the next generation which would be lighter and have page turn buttons on both sides.  Sadly, I don't think there will be a next generation.   Cry

This thread was actually tempting me until I read that the DX weighs 18.9 ounces...holy moly!!!

Thanks, but no thanks.  I'll just keep turning the pages more often on my lighter models.  Tongue

If it helps, I find my new Kindle Touch more annoying to hold than my Kindle DX.  My hands cramp with the Touch.  The DX can sit on my lap or on a pillow or just against my arm AND I can see the screen from further away.

I read laying on my back in bed, is there anything that would help holding the DX for reading like that?

I was going to put the DX into long term storage until I get a nice reading chair, but if I can read it in bed so much the better.   Smiley

I just got it out of the box again tonight, and wow is that screen nice.   Cheesy

Peeramid pillow will sit on your lap or tummy and hold the DX.  I have one and use it for my DX.

There are other brands, I believe even one of our members sells a different version.

For reading while I am sitting up, I use my iPads Wedgepad.

I'm pretty disappointed with Woot. Their site indicated that if ordered before noon CST it would arrive by Christmas. I bought one for my husband for Christmas.

My sister ordered one about 8:00 a.m. EST and got a Fedex tracking number overnight that shows delivery today.

I ordered one yesterday at about 10 a.m. EST and got a tracking notice saying that it was shipped via Smartpost which means the package travels by Fedex but is ultimately delivered by the Post Office. There is no way it will arrive today. The tracking page has no information on it about the shipment except that it was "expected" to ship yesterday but the tracking email says that with Smartpost, the tracking information may not be available for a few days. Doesn't sound like they used overnight shipping for my order as promised.

What a total bummer.

I'm not sure I understand your concern that the package might not be delivered today -- they didn't promise one day delivery; they promised 'by Christmas' delivery. Christmas isn't until Sunday. . .so delivery tomorrow would still be in time.

I find that things I order from Woot do tend to arrive when promised. I ordered yesterday morning and have received a shipping notice.  For the record, Woot items often don't even ship until several days after they're offered so I concluded that they'd done exactly as promised and shipped it out straight away.

It's also the case that things outside their control sometimes cause delays.  For example, I ordered something for my son some time back and got a note that the item I'd bought wasn't available -- turns out they didn't get as many as they'd been told they would.  But they were getting a comparable/better item and would ship it as soon as possible and would refund the shipping charge for my trouble.  Or I could cancel the order.

I guess I'd say that if it does not, in fact, arrive in time to give on Christmas, you should contact them.  I expect they'll refund the $5 shipping -- which is about what you can expect.  Undecided

Nope. Regular street address. Both Kindles are shipping to the same address actually.

I'm so disappointed in this. I wrote to Woot's customer service but I'm sure with the volume they do, it'll be while before they get back to me.
