I'm not sure I understand your concern that the package might not be delivered today -- they didn't promise one day delivery; they promised 'by Christmas' delivery. Christmas isn't until Sunday. . .so delivery tomorrow would still be in time.

Their page said the item would be shipped "overnight" if ordered by noon CST. If ordered after 12 noon CST it "will still be shipped overnight but there's no guarantee you'll have it by Christmas" is what their page said.

Smartpost is not an overnight service. We've used that service many times at work. The item goes through the Fedex system to the local Fedex hub where it is sorted and then forwarded onto a postal hub in which it is again sorted and transported to your local Post Office. After that, it goes on a truck for delivery. The package has to reach three separate destinations before it goes out for delivery. That's not overnight.

They did ship one of them overnight so I'm wondering why the other was sent by a slower, more complex method.

Just checked the Fedex Smartpost FAQ and it indicates that delivery is typically in 2-7 business days.

Same deal is back again, except that I don't see anything about overnight shipping this time (nor any reason for it).

Yep, saw that this morning.

When I ordered before Christmas it also included the power adapter -- so it could be plugged into the Wall. . .I guess they changed the description at some point because when mine shipped I also got an email that explained that it didn't really come with the power thing but since I'd ordered when the description said it did, they'd send me one.  But they didn't want to hold up my delivery for just that so it will come in a couple of weeks.  Can't say fairer than that.

So. . . . .you gonna get it this time, Claw?  You've resisted twice before. . .surely they're wearing you down?  Grin

Nope, after being tempted so much, I think I may have finally burnt out on the idea. I think it is an excellent deal, but I have no need or even legitimate want for a DX.

Kind of pricy for a pdf reader, especially when my laptop does the job reasonably well.
And..no wifi. Embarrassed

Now, if Amazon would create a K4-NT with that 9.7 inch screen..... Shocked

Actually, no. . .it's a great deal.  It was originally released in 2009 at $489 and even now new ones are $379.  The lack of WiFi isn't a big deal since it has the free 3G.  And it does have the big screen which is much nicer for PDF's, but still works with all the usual Kindle content too.  I got one when it was offered before Christmas. . . . more or less to replace the one I'd had one before that I passed on to my Aunt last Christmas. . .and will be loading a variety of tax reference material on it for tax season.

If I didn't have my iPad, I'd be tempted...but I love PDFs on my iPad so can't see the need for me.  And I can highlight and copy text from them so easily....and color pictures look so nice....  Though the electronics manuals are just black and white, and I have all of them on the iPad.

I have the Xoom, but the size of the screen, though a larger diagonal, is not proportioned for optimal PDF viewing.  And, honestly, tax pubs don't need to be anything but black and white.  I've also figured out that if I send them wirelessly to, say, my Fire, they're then stored in my 'personal documents' at Amazon and I can send them on to the DX (via 3G) without incurring the download fee.  Which is a bit of a loophole, I think. . . .but I'll utilize it until they close it. It's not just a pdf reader, reading my Amazon purchases and other mobi books on the DX is a pleasure.
It's a niche device plain and simple... not for everyone, no device is.

But I thought you didn't do refurbs!

Seriously, since you love the DX format so much, and it appears to be going away, I think you'd be smart to get one to have an alternate/backup.

Egg-zackly!  The things I might actually use the DX for my iPad will do.  And for reading, I prefer the lightness of my K4.

Oh, go on Susan!  You know you want to!
Yeah....  I also know I really shouldn't spend the money....  but I calculated that over two years (figuring it should last at least that long!) it might actually pay for itself in textbook savings....  so I took a deep breath and went to woot.com....

...  and it's sold out.  Don't know whether to be relieved or disappointed.   Undecided

Believe it or not, I haven't had an opportunity to try.  She has it with her every waking moment, except for the time we've been out ice skating or at my parents'  house.  And the past few evenings we've been out very late, so that by the time we got home I was too tired to fool around with it.  Maybe tonight...

Oh no!  I'm sorry. Sad

Or... er. . . . . saved by the sellout. Shocked Huh Undecided

Perhaps it was just not meant to be.
