I get an email every morning listing the free kindle books on Amazon and I usually dl most of them using 1 click and whispernet. The default is send them to my KK3 but then I generally have to go back and spend the time removing them to my archive/cloud. These books also show up in the carousel on my Fire. I would like to eliminate the step of having to phsically go through my KK3 and remove to archive. Is there a way to change the default in the dropdown menu to my fire rather than my kk3 or better yet have the default be send to cloud? In theory I should then be able to access these books from both kindles when I am ready to actually read them, right? I can change it for each purchase but there must be a way to do it overall. Thanks

Your Kindle(s) and Fire are listed alphabetically by the name you've assigned to them. Name your Fire something before your Kindle alphabetically. Or you can put a symbol such as * before the name to put it first.

My bro beagle (1954-1966). I still miss him big time. His last collar hangs on my bedpost.

Thanks for the quick reply Sandpiper!
My KK3 is named Sheila's Kindle and my Fire is named Sheila's Fire so if they are alphabeticaly I would think the fire would be first, so it must not be alphabetical. Maybe it is the order they were registered because the KK3 would be first then.

When mine said Mary's Kindle and Mary's Fire, it defaulted to my Fire, too. So I changed the names, making sure my Touch was the first one alphabetically. *shrug* They may only alphabetize by the first name.

I don't think it worked anyway. The items that I specifically sent to my Fire this morning show up in the carousel on the fire and also are physically on my KK3. I was trying to figure out a way for the books to not get put on my KK3 .

That won't work. For whatever reason, in the 'buy now' drop down, eInk kindles are listed first alphabetically, and other devices follow. So you can't get the Fire to be listed first unless you have no eInk kindles. BUT, it's a drop down field. . . .so before buying, you can switch to the device to which you want the book sent. Select your Fire before you click 'buy'. That way it will go to your Fire and probably download automatically. It will be available via 'archived items' on your eInk kindle, but will not automatically be sent there.

Ann, it shows up on both unfortunately. I guess it is better I get the books on both rather than on neither.
The books I specifically had sent to my Fire did indeed download to it, all the others show up in the carousel. BUT all the books are actually on my KK3 whether I had them sent to the Fire or not. It is those that I would like to go to the cloud instead or just be available in my archive when I am ready for them. It is rather time consuming to go back and organize or remove to archive up to 10 pages of books a day. I need to be more discriminating but it is that word FREE that gets me everytime.
I'm probably not clear on this, sorry

Well, yes. . .that's how the Fire is designed. The Carousel has all books you own and all apps, web pages, videos you've used-- whether on the device or in the Cloud. But with the recent update you can remove things from the Carousel one at a time if you so choose. But if you have it sent directly to the Fire, it should not show up on the eInk kindle -- except that it will be available via 'archived items'.

I thought that too Ann but it shows up on both Kindles. The only difference was that the 3 books I especially had sent to the Fire actually downloaded on to the Fire. All books show up on the carousel and on the KK3. At least now with the new Fire upgrade we can remove the excess from the carousel and I can always remove excess to the archive on the KK3. I was just trying to eliminate the remove from the KK3 step by having everything sent to the Fire but it looks like I would then have to go to the Fire and remove them there from both the device and the carousel so it wouldn't be much of an improvemnt except they remove from the Fire a whole lot faster.

Hmmm. That is not how it's working for me. I just tested it with a free book. Selected my Fire in the drop down and had it sent there. After a sync it appeared on the Fire, on the carousel, and downloaded as expected. Wireless is also on on my eInk kindle and I've done two syncs now and it is not shown there. It is, however, readily available via 'archived items'. As a test, I then sent another free book directly to my eInk Kindle. It showed up on the home page there right away. After a sync it showed up in the carousel on the Fire but did not automatically download. I then removed both titles from the Carousel. The one that had downloaded is still shown on the 'device' under books. Both are listed in 'Cloud', the one that hasn't been downloaded has a little arrow on it. This seems consistent with my general experience, even when I've not been paying such close attention.

I read somewhere that the alphabetical list of devices always puts eink Kindles first, so it may not be possible to set the Fire as the "default". You can always just remember to select the device you want the book to download to, when you buy a book. My husband's Kindle is listed first, so I always have to remember to select my Kindle's name from the list.

Yes, that's the case as I posted in an earlier 'reply'. Sheila's problem at this point seems to be that, no matter what device she selects for 'sending to', it's showing up on the home page of both. . .which is baffling to me.

For what it's worth, I just downloaded two free books. Wifi is on on both the Fire and my Touch. From the website I sent one book to the Fire and one to the Touch. Both downloaded to the appropriate device.

I seem to be having a unique experience then that whether I send it to the Fire or not it still gets sent to my KK3. The only difference being that if specifically do the drop down menu to the Fire it actually downloads to the Fire rather than just being in the cloud and showing up in the carousel.
Thanks to everyone for trying to figure this out with me.

Do your Kindles have the same Send-to-Kindle email address? I bet yes. You can change the addresses to be different so that you can choose which device gets the document while opting in to Personal Document archiving so that the other device can download the file.
