James is a socially-awkward inventive genius. His partner, Bartleby, is an intuitive savant. Together they run one of steampunk London's finest consulting detective agencies. The Home Office has come to them with a dilemma - the Spider, a mysterious assassin that preys on the powerful, threatens to terrorize Queen Victoria's upcoming Platinum Jubilee. Can they track down this mysterious killer? "She moves, at times, with the fluid grace particular to acrobats and dancers, and at others her motions are sudden and jerky, feral and darting. A sudden tilt of the head, an abrupt twist of the spine, and that's all the warning you get before she changes, switching from entertainer to killer, from elegant to lethal. My pet theory is that when she becomes the perfect assassin she gains a new awareness of time and kinetics, her movements so graceful and quick that the human mind can only process them in sudden still images, like the frames of a camera obscura. My words can barely suffice to convey the purity of her motion. I have to think of her in alchemical terms. She's quicksilver."

I really like the look of this, but as I am UK and you are US, I have to adjust my settings to get it. Silly question before I do that. Is it for sale via the UK store? I don't want to fiddle about for no purpose. Cheers.

Blimey, Intinst is a fast reader! I have bought it, but have not yet settled down to read it, will be in a few days I think when all has returned to normal. And yes, great cover too.

Thank you for the review, intinst, and thank you all for your appreciation of the cover. It was created for me by digital artist Pol Subanajouy over at Laughing Phoenix. If you need to commission illustrations or pixel art or old fashioned portraiture I cannot recommend him highly enough. I'm hard at work on the next installment, and I'll be releasing it in early January.

Just a quick update: The next story in the series, Final Flight of the Rio Grande, has been written and is being edited while I wait for the cover artwork. I think you'll like it; it's about an airship.

Keeping the price point at 99 cents for an extended period, but it'll go back up to $2.99 eventually. If you are a fan of steampunk or mysteries, give the first story in the series a chance.

"And They Called Her Spider" was given a 4 1/2 star review by Red Adept Reviews! The plot drew me in from the beginning, with Bartleby describing one of the Spider’s recent murders that he had personally witnessed. The Spider was a young woman who exhibited superhuman speed and strength, and catching her would be no small feat. Bartleby and James made a great pair, reminiscent of another detective team of the era—Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. The story was fast-paced and exciting as the two closed in on the Spider.
I noticed that the author has recently published two more Bartleby and James stories. If “And They Called Her Spider” is indicative of his writing, the series is off to a good start.

I was the reviewer, and I did enjoy the story very much. It definitely piqued my interest enough to want to read the other books in the series, which doesn't always happen.

Just finished the rough draft of the 4th installment in the series. Look for it in early April, but until then why not get started with the first? It's got clockworks, automatons, and Victorian Britishisms galore.

James was a socially awkward but brilliant inventor, while his partner Bartleby was a deductive genius and intuitive savant. Together the consulting detectives have been hired to scour steampunk London for the Spider, an impossible killer targeting only the most well-protected of targets. It's up to them to stop her before she can assassinate Queen Victoria at the pinnacle of her Platinum Jubilee.
