The present my wife and I had originally thought of for my mother-in-law didn't come through, so we decided to get her a Kindle. We both love ours and were pretty sure she would like it. So, Thursday morning, I ordered a K4 along with the charging plug, Prime one-day shipping. Two hours later, I received the tracking number.
I logged on to Amazon on Friday, checked the order status: shipped. UPS came and left - no Kindle. I went onto the UPS website and checked the tracking number. UPS only showed that the billing information had been entered, and it hadn't been received by them yet. I called Amazon. They couldn't find where it went, so they shipped a replacement to me, overnight with Saturday delivery. I would just need to refuse the original (if it ever showed up).
A few hours later, I receive the shipping notice. Later that evening, I check the tracking number on the UPS website, the package had been picked up by UPS and was scheduled for Saturday delivery!
So, Saturday morning, I check the UPS website, my package shows it is scheduled for delivery on Tuesday.... Tuesday.... Hmmm... I called UPS, gave them the tracking number. They told me for sure, it is on the truck and out for delivery. I called back at 1:30pm. Yes, it is still on the truck and they are running behind. It will be there by 4:00pm. At 4:00pm, I call back. They call the shipping center here in town. All deliveries for the day had been made and all drivers had gone home. Turns out they put the package on the wrong truck, which won't be sorted until Tuesday morning. Not even a chance for me to go pick it up myself.
Luckily, my wife was at Target about that time. She went over to electronics where they still had the Kindle in Stock, and picked one up. So, my MIL did receive a Kindle for Christmas, and so far, she seems to love it.
I do have to say Kudos to Amazon for at least trying to get another package out quickly. I also called them after finding out the packages weren't going to be received in time and they recalled the shipments (turns out the original order finally shipped out late Friday evening after a trip from SC to MD). I think the worst part was knowing it was sitting 15 minutes away with no way to pick it up.

Glad you were able to get it at Target. Did she like it?

Yes, she loves it so far. She downloaded her first book and was reading away!
We were in Best Buy on Wednesday and were talking about getting her a Kindle. Turned out they were out of stock on the K4, which is why I ordered from Amazon. I didn't even think about them having them at Target until my wife just happened to be in Target on Saturday.

I hate when Amazon ships my stuff with UPS, they never deliver here on time. Things go much smoother when they ship with fedex.

Another Kindle convert. That's great.

I had a similar issue...UPS is usually great for the 2 day shipping from Amazon, but fails when its a 1 day shipping or if it involves a saturday. Yesterday I had a package from Amazon shipped via UPS that was supposed to be here on Tuesday...instead showed up yesterday. I ordered a Kindle for my mother in law, had it shipped in 1 day, and it was sent by FedEx. It arrived on Saturday at 11am, no problem there. Congrats on the new Kindle for her...I'm waiting for the "support" calls I have to give

Most all the stuff I get from Amazon comes from UPS and it makes it here earlier than I expect more often than not. Maybe it's the difference in locations. I can't remember the last time I got a package from Amazon that came FedEx.

Mine almost all come by UPS as well, though I've had a few smaller items come by private courier. The problem there is that sometimes the courier will mark it as delivered so he doesn't get dinged for it being late, but he hasn't. So I'll see at 9 at night that I'm supposed to have it but it's patently not been delivered. The guy usually shows up the next morning. I always let Amazon know when this happens.

Things get to me pretty quickly. Most items leave Lexington, KY and arrive the next day. What was interesting to me was that the original order left from Columbia, SC (according to Amazon's tracking) on Thursday, but ended up in Maryland Friday evening, which is where UPS actually received it for shipping. The one for Saturday delivery got sent out of Kentucky, but apparently got put on the wrong truck. With the Monday holiday, Amazon actually recalled the shipments and refunded the order, so they never arrived at my house. I'm glad it worked out in the end. Just stressful that trying twice to get the order here, things got screwed up. I'm so glad she likes her Kindle. Between her, my parents, my wife, our kids, and myself, we have 8 Kindles now.

Many people prefer to order directly from Amazon. They generally ship quickly and the Kindle comes already registered which is nice. (Of course there are also some who do it as a way to evade paying sales tax.) Really, the problems Xopher described are actually pretty rare. Besides, before Christmas many Target stores were sold out.

We were at Best Buy when we thought about getting her one, but they were sold out. We didn't even think of going to Target. When we got home from Best Buy, I just went online and ordered. Sent from my gTablet using Tapatalk.
