Okay -- the set up:
I don't do magazines and/or newspapers on Kindle -- usually do them on Iphone -- no need for them on Kindle -- have trialed a couple of subs but prefer what I can do on the Phone over the Kindle.
Bro & SIL are somewhat interested in Kindle but more for the mags and newspapers than for the books (although they will do the books as well). Yeah FIRE is probably much better suited for them but I ain't buying them a Fire (might a K Basic though!)  Wink

The issue:
I've tried to describe doing mags/papers on Kindle but am having trouble getting across to them exactly what they'd be like.

The Question:
Does a mag or paper sub in Kindle for PC look the same as on a Kindle or do they come through in color, different layout, etc.  Would that be a viable way for them to get a taste of what it would be like?  Download K for PC and then do a couple of trial subs and check them out??

thanks

I subscribe to the Washington Post currently and have tried a few other pubs.

You do NOT get a 'newspaper layout'.  Or a 'magazine layout'.  What you get is a First page that has the first article.  You can click a link to 'view sections and articles' at the bottom.  If you click it youll be directed to a two column page.  The left column has the sections with a number that indicates how many articles in each section.  On the right are the articles.  Going up and down moves you between sections.  Going to the right will move you to that column and let you go between articles.  If there are more articles than fit on the page (usually about 4 or 5 fit), use the next page button to see the rest.

When reading any article, next page takes you to the next page. (Duh) and a right click will take you to the next article.  I like this method as I get, in most cases a good couple of paragraphs to decide if I want to keep reading or go to the next one.  Some articles will have pictures which are high quality though, of course, in B&W.  There are more pictures if the subscription is coming on the Fire AND on the fire there may be links within the articles that will take you to a website for more details.  Or, for example, in the case of a book review, will take you to Amazon to buy it!

I would guess that, on a PC, the images would come in color and the links would be live, but I've not actually tried that.

If YOU have a kindle, you could get a trial subscription to show it to them. . .you get 14 days free which would be enough time to get a feel for how it works and whether it is what you/they want.

FWIW, I never really had time to read the daily newspaper -- it was just too cumbersome: big sheets, articles all over the place and then turn 5 pages to finish and find all that's there is two paragraphs.  With the Kindle edition I read the whole paper daily.  Lately I'm having it delivered to my Fire but if I'm going to be out and don't want to take the Fire with me, I can also pull it from my archive to read it on one of my regular Kindles.

Thanks Ann.  Problem with showing them is the 2200 mile commute.  I recommended a Fire to them but also suggested they might take a look at a trial on K for PC and see if they can glean anything from that.  When we talked last night and they laid out how and what they wanted its a perfect fit for the Fire so we'll see where they go.
Appreciate your insights!!  THANKS!!

Ah!  Yeah. . .didn't get that they were so far away.

Maybe there's a KindleBoarder near them that they could meet up with?
