Hi, tobyho, welcome to Kindleboards!

The first thing that comes to mind is that you may not have put the files in the correct place. They need to go into the Kindle's 'documents' folder. If you put them there and they are definitely .mobi files you should be able to see them on your Home Screen. Bear in mind though, that non-Amazon books need to be DRM free in order to read them on your Kindle - if not, they would still show up on the device but you wouldn't be able open them.

Let us know how you get on.

they have no arrived on my Kindle.... they are not there when i first looked but just now i turn it on and the books and docs are there.. this is good news, but why are they showing up an hour or so after I put them on ?

i am using Calibre to convert to .mobi, DRM free.

If you sent them via Amazon they sometimes will take a while to show up. . .depends on how busy the servers are.

And, based on the news reports about how many android and iDevices were opened on Christmas and the HUGE amount of digital stuff that's been downloaded in the last few days, it's distinctly possible that the servers are fairly busy and possibly a bit backed up.  Which is better than crashing completely!
