Mom hated the KTouch

Well true to what I thought, my Mom really didn't like the KTouch I got her for Christmas.  I kinda knew the device would be a bit much for her but thought she might be ok nonetheless.  I gave it to her early (5 days before Christmas) so she could start to use it and try and get use to it.  Sad to say, she just couldn't get use the touchscreen.  She kept hitting the wrong book, she accidentally hit Factory Reset, so I she had to re-load everything.

It's ok because I have actually ordered her the Kindle 3 with Keyboard - I feel that will better for her to use given it is similar to her Kindle 2 but smaller.  When I gave her the Touch, my instructions were to use and try and get use to it, but above all, if she didn't like it, we could send it back.  I didn't want the device to become a hassle because I knew she wouldn't use it.  She was so cute when she told me she didn't like it - kept apologizing about being a pain.  I told her, no sweat.  What is important is a device she is comfortable with, not whether or not I wanted her to have it.  Told her the Kindle 2 is already on it's way and she seems really happy.

I am glad we tried it and I'll be happy when her new Kindle Keyboard comes in, I know she will be ok with this one.  Just wanted to share my story.  Making my Mother happy is what is most important and glad that she will finally get a new Kindle.

That is so sweet. I'm glad she told you so that she could get one that will work for her. It would have been terrible if she just kept it and not used it.

My 84 year-old mother is techno-challenged. But she is able to do email with only a problem here or there. I knew the touch would be more than she could handle, so I opted for the K-3 for Christmas as well. Even that is a challenge for her. But we persevere. Thank heaven that when she turns it on, it is right where she was when she turned it off (when she can remember to turn it off - yay for the long battery charge of the K-3). I think I will always have to have a "real" book or two next to her chair for when she finishes a book and I am not home to help her get to the next one.

You never know.  My 81 yr old dad got my 77 year old mother a fire for Christmas.  She is delighted...like a little kid with a new toy.  He on the other hand won't even go near a regular Kindle.   My mom loves her computer, her Kindle 2 and now her "magic" Fire.  You just don't know until you try.

I got my Mom a K3K for the very same reason. She's 89.

I also told her that I got it for myself because I was afraid it wouldn't be available if and when my K1 died, but she could use it in the meantime. She was happy with that story. She doesn't use it much, but she's starting to get used to it especially since I told her I have a nearly unlimited supply of books in my content manager that I can load up for her.

Now she's asked me to take her to a computer class.

Gotta have the keyboard. Even it's almost to small for my fingers. Any smaller or none at all would make it a chore.

That's why it's great that they have multiple models out and have such a liberal return policy.  Everyone can hopefully find the model that works for them!

I tried the touch, and didn't care much for it. I don't think there is anything wrong with it, I'm just used to the K3. It is like the 5-way, I started with the K3, using the K2 5-way feels wrong, and some K2 people feel the same way about the K3's 5-way. If anything happened to my K3, I'd have to decide between the K4 and the K4T. I like text to speech and audio, so I'd probably get the K4T and get used to it.

I'm not sure which I'd get if my K3 broke.  I may not get any and just read on my iPad--I did that while traveling for 10 days recently and didn't have any issues.

I'd definitely not get another K3 as I don't use the Keyboard much at all, so I'd prefer a smaller device.  I generally like touch screens, but wasn't a huge fan of the K touch I got my mom.  I'm used to the instant response from touches on the iPhone and iPad, so the slowness/lag of e-ink/the Kindle bugged me some.  I also don't use text to speech or the browser.  So I might would just save some money and go with the K4 if I ended up wanting another e-ink device.
