I do like to know how far along I am in the book, it gives me a feel for where I am in the story. It's like when you're on a plane, and you know you're beginning to make your descent, you know that landing isn't going to happen right away, you're getting close. If I know that I am getting toward the end, I know not to expect many new elements of the story to arise, and instead expect things to begin to wrap up. If I really enjoy the story, that gives me time to let the story go. I've read books where the I found the ending startling because there was a sample chapter at the end, so I expected the book to have 20 pages more.

I like locations, it tells you precisely where to look. I just wish locations were an industry standard, but e-books aren't to that stage yet.

The only time I really care how much I have left is if I'm debating finishing a book when it's getting late and I need to go to sleep!  Real page numbers are useful there as they have some meaning after years of reading paper books, as do page numbers that are just how many screens of text you have left.  Locations I haven't quite wrapped my head around yet.

But that doesn't happen often enough for me to care that much.  I tend to get tired and just quit reading regardless of how close to the end I am. Cheesy

If I hit Menu, it shows:

AND if there's been a syncing of the device since that edition was referenced. . . .so, for example, the book might not have had the page number reference file when you downloaded it.  If you've not had wireless on since: even if it now shows, on the product page, that there is a page number reference, your device won't know it.  So that's another reason to periodically connect even if you leave wireless off most of the time.
