DH told me last night that his adapter gets quite hot when it is charging his Fire. Also, he noticed last night that the Fire device itself was very warm on the side where the adapter cord goes into the device. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it normal? Is it a contact Kindle CS issue? Opinions appreciated.

While it's common for adapters to become warm when charging (at least most of mine do), "quite hot" is not normal. And if the device is uncomfortably warm, I don't believe that is normal. My Fire doesn't do that.
We did have at least one member report this to Kindle CS, and I believe they received a replacement Kindle. Kindle CS numbers are at the top of the Tips, Tricks and Troubleshooting thread, where I am moving this.
Let us know what you decided!

Mine was the one I think Betsy is remembering.. It got painfully hot when charging and even under normal use while unplugged. A three minute phone call with Kindle Customer service had a new Fire in hand 2 days later, hot one went back to them.

DH bought a 2nd charger so he could have one at home and one at work (he hates carrying it back and forth). The new one stays "nice and cool" he reports so he called KCS last evening and reported his "hot one". They gave him a promotional credit to cover the cost of purchasing a new charger to replace the hot one and told him to toss the bad one out. The replacement charger will be delivered tomorrow. He's a happy camper. It's his first dealing directly with KCS and he was amazed by their service.
