Strangely, several books I downloaded recently from Amazon have had, well, other people's highlights in them. The first few times I noticed it I thought it was a random highlight, but this last book I found them in proved for sure, that an actual person had clearly selected the highlighted passages, it wasn't just a strange glitch. Anybody else get highlights as a free bonus with download...? It's kind of like getting a used college textbook!

From your Home Page,
Menu > Settings > page through to Popular Highhlights (3rd page on my K4) and click on turn off.

I was confused by that too, when it first started. I really don't see the point.

I think it's interesting to see which passages other people find worth highlighting.

Yes, some people like it. I don't highlight much myself, so I don't want to see other people's stuff. I find it very distracting...

I personally love this feature because oftentimes the popular highlights shown are the most well known passages in the book and saves me from having to hjghlight them

When you go to the menu page & select 'view highlights' you get a list of all the highlighted items & they're noted whether they are yours or someone else's.
When I first got my Kindle I found it distracting, but now I kind of like seeing what other people mark as important. I also highlight & bookmark a lot on the Kindle myself. In particular, in books with recipes or a 'how to' I want to be able to find again quickly. Back in my DTB days, I had a lot of books hopelessly dog-eared or marked up.

This first time that I saw the "popular highlights" I thought I had bought a used ebook that someone had returned. I was miffed.

I'm confused by this concept of how anyone could think they could receive a 'used' ebook from an online retailer...
The concept that someone could even come up with that thought seriously...just wow...
Anyhoo not trying to upset anyone, but as stated earlier, it's a feature that can be turned off. Sometimes it comes in handy, and yes sometimes it can be annoying.

Now, now, NG. Betsy What did I do? Seriously, I sometimes wonder about some of the popular highlights though. Some are obvious, but others not so much which makes me wonder if people aren't highlighting passages simply because others have. Also I've noticed that most of the popular highlights are within the first chapter, which makes me wonder how many people never finish a book.

When it comes to human behavior around tech products? Often.
I've spent the last decade consulting for (and contracting with) Microsoft on various software & hardware products. After that decade I still find myself left aghast by some of the questions people come up with.

If they're HS kids reading for class that is a distinct possibility. OTOH, it might be someone who fully intends to highlight and take notes and generally be a thoroughly attentive reader. . .but then they get caught up in the book and sort of forget. I'd say that's not a bad thing!

I rarely take the time to highlight something that's already a popular highlight, since my point in highlighting/bookmarking is so I can view the phrase or sentence on the listing, which includes all highlights, not just mine. Does Amazon consider 69 highlights as the starting point for being 'popular' - that seems to be the lowest number I've seen the few times I've checked the count.

I've seen as few as eight highlights.

I actually thought I'd read that 3 or even 2 was considered "popular" but I don't pay any attention, really, to it, so that could be wrong.

The highlights drove me nuts until I learned how to turn them off. I really don't want somebody, or a host of somebodies, standing over my shoulder while I read saying, "That's important. Oo, that's important, too! And look there...that's important!"

Seriously. I thought it was a glitch for the longest time! Thanks guys, it didn't even occur to me that it was, you know, actually a feature, let alone one I could turn off. Yay!

Oh, that is so funny. I read an e-book with highlights once and was baffled why it had those highlights. I was confused thinking... I didn't highlight that. I tried to get rid of it, but couldn't. I thought my kindle was acting up or something and doing ghost highlighting. hee hee. I see now there's a way to turn it off. (Thanks for posting how Betsy) I suppose it can be useful to see what other people deem of interest to highlight, but overall if there was a lot of it I'd probably find it more distracting. At least I know why it's there now and how to turn it off. haha.
