Hi All, I have a K3, Fire and just ordered a DXG from Woot!
I don't want ALL of my books to be on this Kindle, just the ones I select. From what I've read, it's impossible but there must be a way other than deleting the 1000+ books I have in my cloud. And what if I sync the other Kindles, will it put all the books back on the DXG? What a mess!

The books won't actually be on the Kindle, they are just available for download in the archives.  If you don't want the Kindle to have access to your archives (maybe you plan on giving it to a child or something) you have a couple of options:1. start a new Amazon account or 2. download the books you want onto it and then de-register the Kindle afterward.

None of your books are ON any Kindle (regular, DXG, Fire) unless you download the book(s) to it.  All your books are in the cloud / archived.  Syncing doesn't download a book from Kindle to Kindle to Kindle.  It will sync "last page read" if you have a copy of the same book on more than one Kindle and have the box checked to do it on Amazon's "Manage Your Kindle" page.

OK, makes sense. It would be perfect if after registering it, it's empty until I download from the cloud.  The Fire shows everything but I did not want this for the DXG. I want it for cookbooks and pdfs so I don't have to scroll around so much. I also wanted the 3G ability. I know it's an older Kindle and email is very show but it will be handy when I'm desperate and don't have wifi. Thanks to both for answering my question, helped a lot.

ALL your books show in the carousel on the Fire, but none are actually downloaded to it.  Touch "Books" at the top, then on the Books page you will see "Cloud" and "Device" at the top.  Go to "Device" to see books are downloaded to your Fire.  With the new update to the Fire (version 6.2.1), you can manually remove books individually from the carousel.

Yes, I understand but since all the books I order show up on both my Kindle 3 and the Fire I was worried that they would show up on the DXG. I know that I have to download the books to the Fire even though I see the book cover. I don't have to download them to K3 (drop down box in Manage My Kindle setting) so I guess that's the answer. They will go to the K3 automatically and I will have to send to DXG in Manage MY Kindles if I want it on that device. This is a huge relief.

They will go to the K3 automatically and I will have to send to DXG in Manage MY Kindles if I want it on that device. This is a huge relief.

I'm concerned that there might still be some confusion about terminology.  Here's my experience:

When I got my new DX and registered it. . .there was diddly squat Roll Eyes on the home page except my personal welcome letter from Jeff Bezos, the Users Guide, a short help document about Transferring content, the Dictionary, and a link marked "Archived Items".  That's it.  And actually, none of it was there except maybe the dictionary until I turned on wireless and synced.

I have subsequently downloaded some books to it by selecting "archived items", finding the couple of books I wanted and clicking to load them.  My DX still has only about a half dozen books because my plan is to use it mainly as repository for tax publications and other work related reference.  I haven't even gotten around to "collecting" anything yet. Roll Eyes

Now, with the Fire, the carousel is set to show both archive and device items so, yes, if you get a new book from Amazon, even if sent to a different device, you'll see the cover shot in the Fire carousel.  But as sandpiper pointed out, you won't see it if you go to books and look under 'device'.  Contrariwise, if you send the new book to the Fire, it will be in both places on the FIRE, but you won't see it at all on an eInk kindle unless you look under 'archived items'.

Mind you. . . I think you understand this. . .but I want to make sure it's clear for others who might read this. Smiley

Enjoy your new DX!

Wouldn't get a funny look from Fred, we use it all the time.  Plus it's from his era...have I mentioned that he's really old?

Books don't automatically go to ANY Kindle.  You can set a default, where new purchases will go if you don't make a selection at the time of purchase, but that is still a choice.  If, for example, you're buying a new cookbook and you only want it on the DXG, open the drop box right below the Orange "Buy Now with 1-Click" button and select the name of your DXG.  It will be delivered to that device, and ONLY that device.  It will not automatically show up on your K3, though it will be available in the archives on all your devices, including your K3.

And the archive is the easiest way (IMO) of getting a book onto a new device.  Rather than logging onto Amazon's webpage, navigating to "Manage My Kindle", finding the book, selecting the device from the drop down menu and clicking "deliver", just open the archives on that particular device, find the book and click it.  It downloads in a few seconds (depending on size) and you're ready to go.

Geko, I think she got that. . .she was just used to seeing on the Fire that even a new purchase that hadn't been SENT to the fire showed up in the carousel. . .she wanted to make sure that the DX worked like a K3 and not like the Fire. Smiley

At least. . .that's what I understood. . . . but It's also certain that I've been wrong before.  Roll Eyes

There are those of us in our 40s, albeit mid to nearly late 40s (wherever a month from 47 lies) who actually know and sometimes even use the term.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say the K3 is her default device for ebook purchases.  My K2 is my default device so all purchases get sent to it and then I see all the book covers on my Fire as well.  I'm thinking this is what is happening with Kathie.

That makes sense. . . and I'm sure Kathie will clarify.

The key is that if she sent it to the Fire via the drop down -- it wouldn't be visible on the home screen of the K3.  The Fire is a different animal in it's use of the carousel and, in general, in how you see the archive vs. what's on the device.  The DX will work more like the K3 does in this regard.

Yes, exactly! And I'm grateful for the "ARCHIVE" info. I thought I had to go to "Manage My Kindle" to download to a specific device. Now I'm enlightened...before...I knew diddly squat!

You can go to your archived books in Amazon's cloud from any Amazon e-reader to download a specific archived  book to the device / Kindle your are then on.  But you can't download a book from the archives to a device / Kindle other than the one you are on.

Got that?  Huh

Got that?  Huh

While. . . .generally true. . . .you can't use one kindle to send a book to another kindle. . .it's not complete.

The thing is "archived items" on one kindle will not have the same things in it as "archived items" on another kindle on the same account.  Because the two kindles will have different books loaded.

If I have a dozen books titled A thru L I might have A, B, C, J, K, L loaded onto Kindle number one.  So the archived items on that kindle will include D, E, F, G, H, and I.  On Kindle number two, I've downloaded books C, D, E, H, J, and K.  So archived items on THAT device will include A, B, F, G, I, and L.

So, from a given device, the archived items is a completely separate set of books than what is otherwise on the home page.

(Note that the Fire is slightly different as the Carousel shows your WHOLE library, whether the book is currently downloaded to the Fire or not.)

Alternatively, if you want to see your whole library, you can do that at MYK.  Note that there will be no indication there of whether a given book is already on any given device.  You can really only tell what has been loaded where by looking at the device itself.  Fortunately, if you send one to a Kindle that already has it, it doesn't mess anything up.

Again, this is a little different on the Fire as it has a decent browser; so you could, theoretically, navigate to the regular Amazon page and log into your account and send a book to another Kindle that way. Smiley

This is a VERY interesting thread - and demonstrates very well how confusing it is sometimes to describe what is happening (& why) on our various Kindle models.
I spent 3 hours with a very dear friend this afternoon trying to help her move her Kindle backup content from a laptop to a netbook she recently obtained. Then I showed her how my various Kindles (she has an original Kindle but is thinking of upgrading, I used to have an original Kindle & introduced her to hers & now have a 3G Keyboard, Touch, Fire & my Android phone) process and handle my Kindle books.
She has even a hard time understanding the 'file & folder structure' of any electronic device, that trying to explain how the various Kindles would process content if she had more than one was a real challenge.

I'm not sure how it works on the other Kindles but on the K3 Kindle Keyboard model, after you click on "Archived Items" on your Kindle home page, you can then search for the particular book that you want to download to the device. Just type part of the book's title or author name. A box will appear at the bottom of the screen. Then you either press the enter button (the one with the arrow) or use the right button on the 5-way controller to choose "search my items" and press the center button. You can then select the book you want to download from the search result(s).

Is the DX still available at Woot?  I'm a total newbie to Woot and haven't found it. (My cousin, on the other hand, waits until midnight each night to see the latest deal... and will buy multiples of things - like three George Foreman grills... three Flip video cameras...)

Woot has one special a day. . . the DX was the deal a few days before Christmas and again one day last week -- and it sold out that second day.  So, no. Sad

I have a Woot alert app on my Fire -- available from amazon -- so each day it pops up and reminds me to look and see what the days deal is. . .there are other woot sites besides the main one too. . .home, wine, shirt, and "moofi" which is mostly technology stuff.

Okay, I'll take that as a sign. Smiley  I've been toying with the idea of getting a second K4 to keep with me.  I've got a $106 gift card for Walmart.... and I want either a soda machine (Twist 'n Sparkle) or another Kindle.  I think a Kindle would be used more. LOL

Ha!! Well... darn it all. Smiley  It's just the hubs and me, and I'm the only one who drinks pop. He's water person. (I suppose I should be too, but I need to have my vices.)   Guess what?  I just check at Amazon and they have the Twist 'n Sparkle thing for only $35! That's ten dollars cheaper than Walmart. I just ordered it and used up the last $25 on my gift card there. SO.. now I can also get the Kindle from Walmart. Smiley  The best of both worlds.

I just loaded up my K4 (I've taken to calling it my K$79) yesterday - I had a couple of books on it, got it shortly before Christmas, but decided it was time to get it set up a little better.   I really, really like it - I seem to reach for it more than my K3 these days.  I'm starting to toy with the idea of giving my daughter the K3 (she's got a K2).  I've kicked myself for not picking up a 3G K3 on Black Friday when someone (Best Buy?  Target?  Both??) had them for $85.  I hate shopping on Black Friday, but that was just dumb on my part... I have a K 3 with wifi only and now I wish I had the 3G. When I got the K3, I wasn't even sure I wanted one and now could not live without it. I also have a Fire and my new Woot DXG. I love it for home but it's just too much to travel with all three.  I tried!

Now I think I may need to get a 3G K3. Took my DXG to hubby's Dr appointment today and I was able to check eBay, bid and win my item and read my email. Yes, it was slowwwwww but it worked. I don't have a smart phone and this was a great alternative.

Am I right....you cannot check email with the new K Touch?

That's my understanding - the 3G on the Touch is limited to the Kindle Store and wikipedia.  I haven't missed 3G with my K3, but I do have an iPhone so that meets my 3G needs.  My daughter would probably miss the 3G a bit - she does download a LOT of books on the fly, would be tied to wifi with my K3.  It's a shame to see it sitting here unused, though.  I didn't realize how much I'd like the K$79.  I thought it would be my "purse Kindle" - but it's just so nice and light it's becoming my "all the time" Kindle.

We gave our  son one for Christmas. I knew he wouldn't use it unless it fit in his pocket. He's very happy with it.

I love my K3 with Whispernet. Worth every penny!

Not exactly.

The limitation is that the 'experimental' browser will only work with a WiFi connection.  If you're on a 3G connection, you'll be limited to accessing the Kindle Store and Wikipedia.
