Kindle dictionary going into English dictionaries

I have a weird problem with my new kindle that is very frustrating. I want to read books in Spanish and translate words to English when I don't understand them. I have downloaded several Spanish English dictionaries but they have been recognised by the kindle as English and therefore are in the English dictionary folder and not the Spanish dictionary folder so it does not work for translation. Is there a way I can get my Kindle to recognise them as Spanish so they work how I want them to? The strange thing is that it works in flashcards that I have downloaded but other time it just translates the word to Spanish definition. I have the standard, cheapest Kindle. Any help would be much appreciated!

I haven't done this...I know there is an option to set the language, but that would change all your menus, etc. Anyone?

The encoding of the book is probably not set properly to Spanish. I believe that you can change this using Calibre.
