2 kindle questions

I bought myself the barebones kindle for Christmas. Unfortunately, it ran out of battery. I just plugged it into my plugged in computer, and it still won't start. It doesn't even show up on my desktop as the computer being aware of it. A yellow light comes on the bottom, but it won't turn on. Is it just charging? I thought I could run it while it was charging. Usually, when I plug it into the computer, it comes on the desktop. Is something wrong?

It probably just needs to charge up enough to turn on. I'm sure it would charge faster without being on.
