I would say about 20% of the books I've bought are not free. There is a lot of good free content that I have found since getting my K1. Quite a few of the books I've bought were to continue reading a series. For me to buy something else, it would be something I really felt the need to read right away.

One of my favorite books I got for free was "The Assassin's Apprentice" by Robin Hobb. After thoroughly enjoying that book, I purchased the rest of the Farseer trilogy, the Liveship Traders series, and the Tawny Man series. That one free book ended up with me purchasing eight more books from that author. I might not have ever looked at any of those books without finding the first one for free.

Sent from my gTablet using Tapatalk.
I did the same thing and I would never have read those books otherwise.

the most I have spent on a kindle book is about $160.00 but it was a textbook, I spent 80 the other day for another textbook.    I prefer to stay in the under $10 range for fiction, and I usually hold off on the $9.99 books unless it is part of a series I am desperate to read.  Lately I have been using overdrive for kindle books.  That being said, most of my family shares my account and they are not as cheap/frugal as I am so at least $100 worth of books per month end up getting purchased.

Everything I read comes from legal means, it is either free from author or other sires like amazon, Smashwords, etc, or I buy it.

My visa metrics tell me I average $200 a month for kindle digital content.  I almost never pay over $10.

But all that is changing.  No more money to Amazon.  I will read what I have purchased already or try buying elsewhere.  As a matter of fact, I have taken my credit card off my amazon account just so I don't forget.

Why?  I must have missed something important.......

Most of the content on my Kindle was not free.  Although I tend to wrinkle my nose at anything that costs more than $9.99, I have spent more than that on books I really wanted.

I'll never pay for an ebook book. I'll download legally-free works and check out ebooks from the library.

I already have too much crap lying around, I don't need to start collecting more things even if the only space they take up are MBs.

almost all free.

I have liked the free books I have picked from new authors as well as I have liked the new author paperback books I used to pick.  But none have inspired me to buy the rest of thier books yet.
There are so many free books that I have so much to read, so I havent bought many.

I borrowed a couple library books to try it out, but I mostly like to use the digital library for audiobooks.  Most of my must have books are audio, so via audible if not at library. (if I have been listening to a series in audio, I dont want to read in print)

I give myself a limit, by purchasing amazon gift cards for $25 per month. If I don't use it all, I don't get another one the next month. This helps me control my spending. I also generally only purchase one book at a time, unless I'm going out of town. I have not purchased any books over $10.

I wouldn't say I have an outright limit per se, so much as I have a limit depending on the book and my level of interest in it. The most I've paid was $14.99 for A Dance with Dragons, but after waiting so long and as much as I loved that series, I would've paid even more for it initially just to get my hands on it (it was a let down on a side note lol).

Another example is The Passage by Justin Cronin. I've wanted to read it for a while, but I just can not bring myself to pay $10+, which it has been priced at for a very long time. I want to read it, but it's not the type or genre of book that makes me feel like I have to have it.

Overall though so of my favorite books recently have been around the $2.99 mark and aren't from big names or companies, and that's where most of my money goes.

Most of my kindle books are free.  I am selective subject-wise in what I will download.  All my books are legal.  With so many available, I'm not looking at the alternative of illegally removing DRM.    I love mysteries especially when combined with humour.  I will buy a good medical biography.  The most I've paid probably has been under ten dollars.  I'll wait for best sellers to come down in price but I've always done that with paper books as well.  I have so many books ahead and as a "retired" person, I don't have to be seen pulling out the latest release in front of my peer group.  I will buy books from an author that I have especially enjoyed after reading one of their free books.   I'm probably a little unique because I've never bothered downloading the "samples" on Amazon.  I will open the sample on the computer from the book icon.   When I'm in a book store, I will randomly open a page and read to see if I like the author's writing style.  Strange isn't it?

I've paid for the vast majority of the books on my K3.  Usually I stay in the $10 and under range. If I see something by one of my favorite authors......that changes the rules a bit.   Cheesy. I have, however, found some terrific books in the $3.99 and under range.
