Is it possible to make a collection within a collection? [as "fantasy" or "adventure" within a fiction collection?]

No, collections work like tags, not folders.

Which means that a book can be in more than one collection. I find that is sufficient for anything I'd feel the need to 'nest'

I've got 12 collections and a TBR for new books that are also listed in the collections. It's worked out well, but I've had problems with the battery running down every time I download a new book. I'm wondering if it's the collections draining the battery if there is extra indexing going on. Anyone else have that problem?

No, I haven't had that. Have you tried checking to see if there is a book that hasn't been indexed because of a problem? The Kindle might be trying to index it again every time you download a new book. Do a search of your items on the Kindle for a nonsense string and it should return results and also any books that aren't indexed. I use "zxzxz" Betsy

I've broken down my collections to the point that I have 4 pages worth. Everything from Humor, History to Fantasy or True Crime. I wouldn't mind a folders system, then I could add stuff on my laptop instead of needing to do it on the KT itself.

Just an idea, but you might maybe us kindle for pc to sort your books and only download the books you are planning on reading soon onto your kindle? This way you would need less collections on your kindle and I think sorting through all the collections on your computer might be easier?

Me too. I just had to make a new folder for an author that I have a dozen or so books from now (Her stuff went on sale so I snagged several of them). She's not an author whose stuff I usually keep but in an effort to make finding her stuff and putting some of them in order, I caved and made a new folder. Would have much preferred to have been able to add her own folder to the one she was already in. I currently have 36 pages of books... not sure how many that works out to exactly...

Some collections only have one or two books, but I do like keeping a wide variety on my kindle. It doesn't help that Amazon has 200-300 free books every day and I have no impulse control.

I'll break down collections by subject as well as genre. I have a sci-fi collection and a seperate one for Star Wars. I have a general Pulp Fiction collection, and then ones for my specific pulp fiction characters or authors: The Spider, Doc Savage, Robert E Howard, etc. One general fantasy collection, and then ones for Tolkien and Game of Thrones. True Crime and History are split. It makes for a lot of collections, but it's easier for me to jump in a find something without wading thru what would be 100 pages of single books. And that's after I removed about a hundred Doc Savage books. :/

You know, it would be nice if Amazon would give us "suggested" collection names for each book. Then as we buy the books, it gets downloaded, and we can select from a number of suggested collection names. But I do agree that I wouldn't be able to use my kindle if I didn't put my books into a set of collection - just wish that I could do it on a computer instead of on the kindle. The first time took me a while to get a set of collection name I was happy with.

Sounds pretty much like how I do it. Some collections I keep all the books from but some I delete after I read them. I keep all the Dresden File books for instance even after they've been read so they have their own folder. It's frustrating for sure but it IS better than having page after page of just a book title to go thru. You know, it would be nice if Amazon would give us "suggested" collection names for each book. Then as we buy the books, it gets downloaded, and we can select from a number of suggested collection names. Yeah we were all pretty happy when we got the collections option. I always hated having to look thru page after page of book titles, and not being able to remember what the book was about or the genre, cause who knows when I actually downloaded it. I kind of always wondered why Amazon didn't give some sort of suggestion on collection or genre. Then again I don't always agree with what they tag something as. Catch-22 maybe.

I can't wait for them to add better functionality to organize and group books. I'm not the most organized person in the world but it still gets on my nerves how messy my Kindle gets!

Has anyone ever seen a change happen from sending a message to that kindle-feedback@amazon.com address? Maybe the Collections feature came from that. I just sent in a suggestion that they allow us to choose where a book opens (front cover, for me) in the Settings and received a nice thank-you-so-much.

Adding nested folders wouldn't be terribly difficult, computers have had nested folders for decades. The Kindle really is a computer, we just don't tend to think of it as one, because of how we use it. You could still have one book in multiple folders, similar to how you can have shortcuts in windows.

Oh, sure. The original Kindles didn't even have an organization feature. And I'd venture to say that many of the tweaks in the bells and whistles have been because of suggestions from users. . . . .not to say they hadn't already thought of them in the development team, but having users ask is probably one of the things that helps them decide where to focus their resources. And one of the big things on the Fire was people wanted to be able to remove books from the carousel. . .that came out in an update after the original release.

My guess is that with collections being more like tags (you can have books in more than one collection) the thinking is that sub-folders may not be needed. For example you could have the book, The Two Towers, in the collection, Fantasy, and in the collection, Tolkien. About the only way around this, at present, would to be have a, Fantasy collection and a, Fantasy - Tolkien collection also and assign, The Two Towers, to both?

I suggest organizing your books on an external hard drive in your computer I have a root folder called books and two sub-folders fiction and non-fiction. Under fiction is Sci-Fi and action, and if my mrs wants I will put a romance folder on that level.

Note that you can create collections on Kindle for PC and sort, then with the books also downloaded on your Kindle, you can import collections to the Kindle and voilą the books get sorted. The down side is the books have to be download to both the app and the Kindle...but that's not difficult.
I don't do much with collections, but....

You don't have to have the books downloaded to the app to sort them on the PC, all archived books are sortable there. The hard part is knowing what archived books are new since your last organizing session because the "sort by most recent" doesn't work on the archive. I use my Manage Your Kindle account and go to the last date that I sorted, and then search by title on the PC to put into categories.

I find that is sufficient for anything I'd feel the need to 'nest' For me I'd like subfolders just to condense what's on my home screen to reduce clutter. For instance, so I could have folders of authors I have several books by, or series of books etc., within my "Fiction" folder. Where as now I have the Fiction collection, a Stephen King collection, a Song of Ice and Fire collection etc. all on the home screen.
