When i plug the Kindle into the computer the little orange charging light comes on, but it doesn't get to the point where I can put new books on it.

I'm not using the cord the Kindle came with, but that shouldn't be the problem. I have never used that cord. Less than 24 hours ago i used the same cord to put more than a dozen books on my kindle, went to bed, woke up, and now it will only charge.

Is there something I'm missing or do I have a genuine problem?

Just to add a little more information that might be pertinent.

Last night I used Calibre to convert 19 books from .epub to .mobi. Then I put said books onto my kindle like I always have and disconnected it and started reading. I get up this morning and plug it in and I can't get the USB screen like i did last night

I have tried the hard reset, by holding the power button down for 20-30 seconds, I got the boot-up screen. Plugged it in, and it's charging but it won't give me the USB screen still.
grrrr!

Oh, and it's a Kindle Touch.

*EDIT* Added model type

Well, you've done all the troubleshooting I can think of at the Kindle end of things, so what I would do now is check everything else out as a process of elimination:

Try another cable - the original Amazon one if you can. There are 4 connectors in a USB cable, charge uses 2 of them, data transfer the other two. If the data transfer wires are damaged, you'll still get charging but no sync.

Try a different USB socket - the Amazon cable in particular has a rather large plug surround, which means it doesn't plug fully into some USB sockets especially on laptops. The USB plug is made so that the earth and power connectors make contact before the data connectors, so again, charging but no sync might be a sign of the cable not plugging fully in or a faulty socket.

Try another computer - if you can plug it into somebody else's computer, see if it connects properly then.

Let us know the results of these tests and we'll advise further.

And to add to Morf's excellent advice, have you tried re-booting the computer that you are plugging the Kindle in to?

Are you certain you aren't connected to your PC? I mean have you opened 'START' 'MY COMPUTER' and looked to see if the Kindle is there? Have you tried taking books on and off using Calibre?
