I have 685 archived books, all of which have been read except about 10. I have collections of
Reading Now Future Reading Misc. Games Resource Permanent
In Reading Now I keep 3 or 4 books that I am reading, maybe a Sci Fi, a Biography, a current best seller, etc. Future reading has the 10 books I'm waiting to read. Misc are lists I sent myself. I keep a list of all my ebooks, an address list, etc. Games are obviously games Resource would be dictionaries, bibles, Federalist papers, kindle and Ipad manuals, etc. Permanent are 3 or 4 very select books that are important to me and that I like to reread often.
Why do so may people keep hundreds of books on their Kindle? Until recently I kept a copy of every book on my computer, primarily becasue about one third of them were purchased elewhere (ususallly either Baen or Fictionwise) and I am not as positive that they will be in business for the rest of my life. I have no such qualms about Amazon. So I recently had the other book sellers re-email all my books to my Kindle so they are all in my Amazon cloud now, ready for easy retrieval. It wouldn't matter to me if Barnes and Noble went under and took Fictionwise with it, Amazon will have a copy of my books bought from the failing firm.
What am I missing that so many people want to keep all their books on their Kindle? Is there some advantage that I am not seeing?

I like having a library with me at all times. I have no idea what I might be in the mood to read...

I keep mine on my Kindle for convenience. I don't want to have to go through and take them off. Plus, as long as I have the space, I see no problem having them on there. Also, like Betsy the Quilter, I might change my mind in which book I want to read and pick up another one.

I have to archive all but the five books I am reading, my mind tends to wander and if I have too many books to choose from I will never finish a book.

I only keep unread books & cookbooks on my Kindle. I have no need to keep a book I have read on my K since I have almost filled it with unread books.

Too many post-apocalyptic stories. No really just like to have them all on me. I guess I do have some worry that something will happen and they will all be erased. That would take out about 80% of my library since I've gone mostly digital.

It's one way I know what hasn't been read yet. There doesn't seem to be a way to sort the cloud, so I sort on the Kindle. Books I might want to read again go into a separate collection. Books I didn't like just get deleted from the Kindle.

I keep a lot of books on my Kindle especially of the authors I enjoy the most. When I'm tired and don't want to concentrate on a new book I'll pull up a favorite and reread it. I travel a lot so it is just easier having the books where I bring one up anytime without the worry of a wifi connection.

I did until a while ago, I took them all off only keeping the ones I really wanted or needed on them. It's clean now but I think I might fill it up again soon

Ah see? I have a Kindle with 3g connection, so I never think about needing a wifi available connection. if I want to reread a book, I just turn on my K and connect to my archive and dl the book. I used to reread books all of the time, but since I have so very many yet to be read, I don't reread many anymore.

I only keep unread books on my Kindle and yes, there are hundreds. I have a lot of collections so if there was a duplicate collection system in my Kindle account, I might not have them all on there either. But I have like 1300 total books and there is no way to sort them or anything, so finding something through the archives on the Kindle would be impossible.
With my collections I know at least whats what and then I can decide what I want to read.

rofl. I have almost 4000 books on my account. when I open my Manage My Kindle page, I also open a second window and surf for about 5-10 minutes or so while the book list populates.

For me, it's laziness.
I have books stacked and shelved around the house in no particular order except size, because some of my shelves are taller than others. Graphic novels are pretty much together, but that's largely a function of size, too.
Most are in boxes in the attic in no order whatsoever.
So, most of my Kindle books are on my Kindle with some general categories. Eventually I'll need to sort them on my computer, with Calibre, but right now they're fine where they are.

My mom and I share an Amazon account with our two kindles. She likes to keep a lot of books on her kindle for the simple reason that you can't organize the books in the archive in categories. She wants to keep track of books she's already read, books that I've bought that she isn't interested in, etc. If she keep these in categories on her kindle, then the archive is nice and tidy and she can easily find things and see if I've bought a new book she might like.
If she keeps only a few books on the kindle, then the archive is a big mess of books she's read, books she hasn't read but wants to, and books she isn't interested in.

Because I just bought the K4 wi-fi only, and I can't always depend on being able to get a wi-fi connection to download something.

I keep up to 50 on the Kindle, but the rest is usually archived in my library. Before any travel, I update what I have on the kindle with a nice list of 10 possibles that include backup reads in case. That's in addition to the few that float on the TBR that sort of stay there until read. They're mostly organized into collections so that I can grab a paranormal or a shorter work or a cozy or whatever I am in the mood for. Sometimes I'll read short stories for plane rides because I can't concentrate with the interruptions. But if it's a longer flight I'll just start a novel.

I keep mine because I'm lazy and disorganized. I don't have 685 books though. I sort by most recent so that whatever I'm currently reading is up top. I guess I haven't had a need to organize on the Kindle. It's not like I am going to forget what I am currently reading. I do organize my books on goodreads though (owned, to-read, read, etc.) If/when space becomes an issue I'll start deleting. A lot of the books I read are from the library, though. I do delete the Amazon notifications and messages. For some reason it annoys me having to look at them on my home screen.

I only keep unread books on my Kindle. As soon as a book is read, I write the information down in a notebook and archive. I rarely re-read. So, as of right now, there are 147 unread books on my kindle and 1,527 archived items. I don't even set up collections except one labeled with my 2-year-old grandson's name for the books we read over and over and over and over and...

I may read one at a time but the list helps me decide what I get to read next. Internet or WN not always available. I am starting to delete the titles I have read. Sylvia

Because the Kindle does not get heavier with extra books?
I like having my library with me all the time. I'm rarely browsing (I mean, I start reading and I tend to finish the books before looking for the next one.) And when I do browse - I really enjoy it. "Oh look, I forgot I had that. Oh dear, what was I thinking about that one? Oooohhh, that's a good one." Etc.

My iPad has a decent chunk on it, and i can't find diddly-squat. What's there is there ecause when i bought it I sent it to the device and didn't clean up anything....
The two kindles have the kids' books on them in collections by their names and some by series.
Every time I launch Manage My Kindle I want to throw up. I have hope since new iPad kindle store looks nice that they can do SOMETHING with MMK, anything would be an improvement and help with the device end of things.

I don't keep ALL my books on. . .but I do keep a fair number. . .every month or so I'll browse through and see what I haven't read and what I might want to read soon and load 'em up. So I probably have 2 to 3 dozen on any given kindle at any one time.

Because it's my library. It's also much less of a hassle to find books on my K3 in collections than going through my archives, and I don't always have a connection even though I do have the 3g K3.

I derive considerable comfort from having my books where I control them. With the books on my Kindle, I can have them whenever I want. If I'm away from WiFi, I still have my "bookshelf". There's no shortage of space on my Kindle, so why not have a large library at your fingertips? Another reason is that if I keep them on the cloud, I'll forget about them.
