Does anybody still read on their Kindle 1?  I got mine for Christmas 2008 and have been reading on it ever since.  I'm not very tempted to get a new one as I am still in awe of my 1. Cheesy  I do so love it and it has all my books on it between it and the card. Grin

My husband and I both have K1s that we use all the time.  I've never seen a reason to upgrade, until these bite the dust.  There are actually a few features that I prefer on the K1 to the way Kindles work now.

I have a K1, a K3 and a Fire. All are used for reading at various times. Can't seem to give up my Klassic, it still works as good as the day I received it, and still has the original battery. I have a replacement for it if needed, though.

I sold mine back to Amazon last fall. . .it was over 3 years old, had been borrowed by my son for a while, and the scroll wheel was a bit temperamental.  Since I also had a K3 and was looking to try the new Basic Kindle I decided it was best to send it back home.  I got around $20 for it and used that toward my Basic Kindle.

I also got my K1 for Christmas 2008.  I use it daily and it is still like new.  I see no reason to replace it.  I like the fact that it is a little bigger and fatter, it is very comfortable in its Oberon cover.  I will not replace it until it goes into the big sleep and then I will be sad.  But....I also got a Fire for Christmas.  I don't consider the Fire a replacement for my K1.  I use it very differently.

I still use my KK/K1, it's always by my bedside with my K2i in my purse for on the go reading.  I can't give up my KK/K1, it was the best gift I ever got from my brother...which means a lot!  Not to mention it rocked my world when I first got it, and everything has changed after.Smiley  It's still going strong and I even bought a new battery for it...just incase.Smiley

My grandson still uses my first K1 every day. It works as well as it did 3 years ago and will probably outlast my third generation Kindle.

I passed mine on to my girlfriend when I got a K2 (I know have a K3 and passed my K2 on to my parents over a year ago).   She doesn't use it much though since she mainly uses her iPad.

As I've said before, I personally didn't like the K1 much at all.  Great screen, and loved the whispernet, but otherwise I hated the hardware. Didn't like the big page turn button that I never got used to not bumping, hate the scroll wheel, didn't like the wedgeshape, didn't like the rubber backing (made it feel cheap), hated the case it came with as it didn't hold it securely etc.

No offense to those who loved it (or still love it!).  I bought it instead of a Sony Reader for the whispernet and the (at the time) better selection and pricing in the Amazon store, but I pretty much regretted that decision up until I got a K2 as I liked the Sony Reader hardware so much better.

In the long run, I'm glad I went Kindle over Sony as the K2 was nice, and the K3 was finally a great piece of hardware.  And I love the Whispersync and being able to read my e-books not just on my e-reader, but also on my iPad, iPhone, computers etc.

I loved my K1. It was used pretty much every day since I got it. I would probably be still using it if it wasn't for the scroll wheel no longer working. That is pretty much the only reason I now have a K3 (3G keyboard).

Some people didn't like the look of the K1, but I found the chicklet keyboard very easy to use for taking notes, and the larger size made it comfortable for me to hold in or out of a case. My K3 fella so small, it lives in a case all the time just for the added bulk (I felt like I was going to drop it, and it feels much more delicate than the K1).

I like the K3 very much, and read on it daily. There are times when I do get nostalgic for the K1.

I still use my K1 occasionally (my primary reader is a Sony).  I bought my mother a K4 to upgrade her K1 for Christmas.  She opened it and said "But I love my current Kindle and there's nothing wrong with it....I think I'll just put the new one away until that one stops working".  Huh

(I think I am going to return the K4 as there is no point in hanging onto it given how quickly the prices keep dropping.)

I gave my daughter my K1, and the beautiful Oberon butterfly cover, when I got a K2.  I offered to upgrade her this past Christmas and she declined.

I loved my K1.  I got it around April 2008.  It is still working fine for its 4th owner from what I hear.

I didn't have the pleasure of using a k1 or k2. My first kindle was the kindle keyboard. I got it Christmas of 2010. I got my fire this Christmas and I love them for lots of reasons.

This was my issue with the K1.  I loved everything about it except the hardware.  Had the same problem with the BIG page turn button (constantly changing pages) and the wedge shape for some reason made it hard for me to hold it.  I do miss it, but both were given away to people that to this day are still using them!

I have a K1, K3 and Fire and love them all.  Recently, I find myself reading on my K1 for extended periods because the page buttons seem more easy to use without having to keep my wrist bent at an angle.  And, it never freezes when I am highlighting and making notes.  Overall, I still read mostly on the K3, but I do wish its page turn buttons were larger/higher.

In the computer industry we typically suggest putting computer related items on a four year rotation of upgrading to newer models.  Typically the changes in computer technology make a difference enough that in the four years computers have gotten faster and better enough to make a significant change in the capabilities of the computers.  Since the original kindle entered the market almost four years ago the computer industry would be recommending original kindle owners consider the upgrade shortly.  My network server is two years old and I will start looking for an upgrade in another two years, the laptop has another three years to run and the kindle has another three and a half years to go.  I think most computer industry people would suggest upgrading to a model six kindle since the fire is considered to be a model five.  The current models are too early for owners of the original kindle.  This is a suggestion.

My recommendation on upgrades has always been to upgrade when the new version does something you need/want to do that the older version did not.

Or, when you want a new toy.  Grin

To get back on topic, I love my K1 and haven't misturned a page in years.  I always pick it up by the bottom, where the keyboard is. (And I liked the wedge shape.) But I love my K4, my KTouch and my Fire, too.

I got my Kindle 1 for my birthday at the end of October, 2008.  It's still going strong and I love everything about it.  Love the Oberon cover I have for it also! BUT the major reason I love it and have no desire to upgrade to anything newer, is the memory card that it uses.  I have no books on my Kindle itself -- everything is on the memory card.  While I know the newer ones boast about how much internal memory they have, it seems to me that the more books you have, the slower the Kindle would start to be.

So, it's the original K1 and its memory card for me!

I've had my K2 for almost three years now, and I don't have any urge to upgrade. I do get kind of jealous of the superior contrast ratio newer Kindles have (heck, even my hubs's nook has a better contrast ratio), but it doesn't make it any harder to read. I just can't justify the cost of snagging one of the pretty new Kindles, especially now that I have an iPad.

I still have my K1.  Actually, a friend is borrowing it so she can read one of my books (she doesn't have a Kindle at all).

I have a K2, my mom has a K3, and I just got a Kindle Touch.

I know I should probably sell the K1 and K2, but since I have a (almost) complete set, I have this irrational need to keep them all.  Like, instead of a Mac fangirl, I've become a Kindle fangirl!   Grin

*I also have an iPod Classic, an iPod Touch, and an iPhone.  Can't bring myself to get rid of any of the iPods, either.
