I bought my husband the $79 Kindle when it was first released and it did not come with the power adapter. That was at the end of September.

I bought a Kindle 4 in November and one for my husband in December. I read that the adaptor wasn't included, just the connection cord to the USB port. We like to travel but very rarely travel with a laptop. Therefore, for each Kindle I purchased a North American adaptor and also a European adaptor. And no, there was no 'free' adaptor included  Cheers - and enjoy your Kindle. I adore mine!!! |

My experience is the same. The Basic and Touch Kindles ship with a micro USB cord. They can be charged via the computer but to charge from the wall you need the 'plug end'. That's why, when you are on the product page and look at the information below the 'buy' button, it offers the power adapter right then and indicates that it's not included. As an alternative, there are a number of power adapters that can be used. . .I have one that has multiple plugs and USB connections:  The FIRE, on the other hand, comes with ONLY a single piece power cord that plugs into the wall. It does not come with a separate USB cord. |

I bought the basic $79 Kindle (since I'm in Canada, $109 for me) at the end of December. It didn't come with a power adapter.

My $79 Kindle Basic, which cost $151 since I'm in Mexico, came without the adapter and just had the USB/MicroUSB cable. I had the adapter from my Kindle3 Keyboard but I usually use the $6 Blackberry charger to charge both of my Kindles.

They include the USB cable, but not the adapter itself. I use my cell charger (my phone charger fits the Kindle) most of the time. You can also buy a USB adapter in any tech store fairly inexpensively.

Read the reviewers latest comment in response - she bought the Kindle Keyboard which does indeed come with an adapter (because it was released before the others, when they still included adapters). She tries to claim it's not made clear but it says on the Kindle Keyboard page:
Included in the box
Kindle wireless reader
U.S. power adapter
(supports 100V-240V)
USB 2.0 cable
(for connection to the Kindle power adapter or to connect to a computer.)
Whereas on the $79 Kindle page:
Included in the Box Kindle wireless e-reader, USB 2.0 cable, and Quick Start Guide. Power adapter sold separately.
So Amazon is quite clear about which Kindle's the adapter comes with, this reviewer just didn't looking carefully enough.

That is amazing-- I have never in my life seen a rechargeable device sold without a way to recharge it! That is a big demerit for Amazon in my view as it would only cost them a few pennies to include it, but leaving it out is an inconvenience to the customer. Is this just the way things are going nowadays? Are cell phones and other devices now sold without power cords?

It is sold with a way to recharge it--Kindles may be recharged by plugging the USB cable into a computer's USB port. I would have preferred a power adapter unit, but on the other hand I already have many USB adapters...

When I bought my kindle wifi with specials, it came with only the usb connector. I already had the charger from my kindle two. And the family that I am a nanny for bought me a kindle fire for christmas. So now I have three kindles and two chargers.

It is pretty clearly stated in the product description. . . .though I completely understand how previous kindle users could miss it. Pretty sure you just get the USB cable - which can be used to charge via a power enabled USB port (I use the ones on my xbox and sky box so i dont have to leave the PC on)
But you have to buy the actual mains adapter plug seperate.

If you have a different adapter, though, like for an iPod/iPhone, or an older Kindle, or pretty much anything, it will work.

Yeah, most people these days already have a USB wall adapter from other devices and if not, you CAN charge it with a computer via the USB cable. Amazon wouldn't sell a product with no way to charge it.

Lots of devices are sold without power adapters - iPod touch and MP3 players for example. Amazon excluded the power adapter so they could hit the $99 sweet spot. |
