I had my books sorted into a few different categories on my original kindle. After amazon sent me a replacement due to a technical issue, I got lazy and never even created any categories. Now I have a ton of books on my kindle keyboard and want to finally set up categories, but the prospect of assigning each book to a category one by one seems daunting. Is there an easier way? Perhaps a way of doing it while my kindle is connected to the computer and doing a drag and drop? I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks!

It's a solution that everyone is searching for!

The quickest way to do it on the Kindle itself is to do it by collection, rather than by book. That is, don't go to each book and put it into the appropriate collection, but go to each collection in turn and add books in there. (Right click on the collection, then choose add/remove and then just go through your whole list ticking the books you want). It's still very long winded though.

There are some third party software solutions, that people have had varied success with. There's Calibre for one, and you need the collections plugin for that - there are lots of threads on here discussing Calibre. There's Kindelabra, and there's Kindle Collection Manager too.

I can't speak as to the success of these and it's likely if you google it, you'll come up with a few more. Just a case of trying them all out and seeing which, if any, does what you need it to do.

There was a discussion on this not too long ago:  http://www.kindleboards.com/index.php/topic,98012.0.html

A couple of things to add to Linda's comment:  You may be able to import the collections from your previous kindle via "archived items".  Any books you'd previously 'collected' will go into their assigned categories.

AND, if you have a PC, download Kindle for PC.  You can set up collections there and it tends to be rather easier than on the Kindle itself.  Then import the collections from there onto your kindle.  Again, if the books are there first when the collections are imported, they'll automatically be 'sorted'.

When you do this, you can expect that it will trigger an indexing so you can expect the battery to drain a bit faster.

Good thinking, Ann. I'm always forgetting about the Kindle for PC option!  Roll Eyes

Thanks so much! I was expecting responses that basically said "no can do. " I'm glad I decided to ask anyway. Great info!
