JUST finished it and it was soooo good. Not only does it tell you all the backstory on the characters (much of which I'd somehow missed during the episodes) but it goes into greater detail about the historical period, and best of all (for me, anyway) it was v specific on exactly what kinds of tasks and chores the servants would be expected to do. So now I know that Daisy (or the typical kitchen maid) is up before 4 a.m. every day and has to go to bed while the other servants are enjoying their best part of their day--hanging out in the kitchen after the day's work is done. Really interesting. I sent a copy to my mother, too, b/c I know it'll enhance the enjoyment of the rest of Season Two. Anybody else out there totally adore DA?

Hmm, I think this is one of those books I'll have to get in Hard cover over the Kindle version. It has pictures and sketches in it and the Kindle price isn't that much lower than the hard cover.

The book seems interesting, do you need to watch the TV show to understand what is going on in the book?

I was wondering the same thing. I haven't bought it yet for that very reason.

Off to go pick up a copy! I had seen the book and I'm THRILLED to hear it's worth the investment! I also wanted to recommend the PBS television series Manor House. It's available on Netflix. They took a bunch of people, assigned them positions in a manor house (some were designated servants, some the family) and made them live with only the technology and comforts available at the time. It was FANTASTIC and COMPLETELY made my Downton Abbey experience that much richer. http://www.pbs.org/manorhouse/

I've read the book (gave it to my 89-yr old mother in hardback and Kindle edition for me) and I don't think you need to be watch the show to enjoy it at all. I do think it really enhances your enjoyment of the show by knowing all these little details, etc. (I knew nothing, really, about WWI and the backstory definitely adds to your understanding of what you see on the screen.) But just as a book outlining details of how people lived back during this era is fascinating all on its own. Plus, there are a lot of references and photos about real people in history who did the same things our cast does.
