As an ardent fan of Calibre I am curious to know just how many Kindleites are using it.

I don't use a fraction of its capabilities but would be lost without it (I'm the same with my Iphone).

I use it, and I'm a big fan. As well as e-books, I use it to catalogue audio books and paper books. I generally use the manage & convert functionality. The news download function is a very nice feature, but I don't use it any more. I found that I never actually read the news I'd downloaded - I always preferred to read whatever book I was in the middle of Smiley

I've been using it for all my non-amazon/non-DRM material, which is what I have the most of, using it to catalog and convert to .mobi if necessary.  I have a lot of PDF format reference stuff in there.  But after recently starting to read various ebook forums I realized I should also import my commercial ebooks into it for catalog and back-up purposes.

One point, though, just in case you didn't realise - Kindle DRM is device-specific. Copies of DRM files have limited usefulness as backups, since you'll only be able to restore them onto the device you bought them for.

As a reminder, removing DRM is against Amazon's Terms of Service and we do not discuss how to do so on Kindleboards, nor permit links to sites that do.  Some posts have been edited to conform to these guidelines.  Thanks for understanding.

I use it like crazy for my Amazon and Barnes & Noble books.

I wanted to like the Kindle collections plugin, but it's a bit tedious compared to using the Amazon site... IMO.

I do realize that the DRM books will only work on that specific Kindle.  One good thing about Amazon is that any books I buy there stay available in their cloud for any Kindle I have or buy in the future (at least, as long as they stay in business and deign to keep it that way).

I've been wondering though, what about other vendors-- B&N, Apple, etc.-- are books you buy from them able to be re-downloaded to a new device in the future, say if your old ipad or nook dies and you buy a new one?  And what if you buy a DRM'd book from an independent vendor? How does that work?  (I don't know and that's one reason I've just gone with amazon if I buy a DRM book since I know how it works with them).

Usually if there's DRM it won't work on a Kindle unless it's Amazon DRM.  Some other devices can read DRM of their own and maybe from elsewhere also.

Most of the ebook vendors have some system to preserve your purchases so they can be accessed even when you get a new device.

And most folks figure that if the company that they've purchased the book licenses from goes belly up -- well, their Terms of Service agreement is also void. . . . Roll Eyes

Just to be clear, I still think it's worth putting your DRM'd books into Calibre, since the management functions will still work, and I think Calibre is the best way to manage an e-book collection.

I've been wondering though, what about other vendors-- B&N, Apple, etc.-- are books you buy from them able to be re-downloaded to a new device in the future, say if your old ipad or nook dies and you buy a new one?  And what if you buy a DRM'd book from an independent vendor? I think most vendors use Adobe DRM on ePubs, and as long as your device/application is registered to your Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) account, you can move between devices. So, if you bought a new device, you'd be fine as long as you were able to register it to ADE. The only form of DRM I've seen from independent vendors doesn't actually prevent it being copied - instead, they put some sort of identifier on the file, so that they can trace where copies came from.

From what I can tell, Apple is an exception, and books bought from Apple will only work on Apple devices.

I want to use it but I can't figure it out. I need somebody to show me how to use it. I am pretty good with computers but this software has me stumped. I have almost 9000 books and I really need some organization and so I am trying to find somebody to show me how to use it...
