If I buy a book off Kindle that I have to read for school will it match up with a hardcopy version of that text. I am a history major and it is crucial that I have the page numbers from citing text in class discussions as well as for weekly papers from the kindle match up with those in a hardcopy book. Thanks

If the Kindle book has page numbers, it will say from which paper book the page numbers are from, on the product description page.

Welcome!

In general, a Kindle book does NOT have page numbers.  However, as Susan says, many kindle books are associated with some specific paper edition; if so, you can see the 'page' you're one in any book by hitting the menu key. (Not sure how it works on the Touch, but I assume it's still possible.)

The thing to do would be to find the book in the Kindle store and see if the associated paper edition matches what you've been assigned.

There are location numbers, which are more accurate. Like others have said, depending on the book, it may have page numbers associated with a specific print edition.

Some print editions may have different page numbers depending on the printing (hardcover, paperback, and so on). The best thing is to require the print edition that correlates to the digital edition.

Amazon has also started posting 'look inside' versions of books where you can see either the hard copy or Kindle version.  The Kindle version I looked at appeared to be the touch (in color) as opposed to the standard Kindle (gray/black e-ink).  I don't know if that is just for new books or if they're doing it on older ones too.

And, most books you can get a sample of before buying the whole thing, so you could check it out before paying.  One would hope that since one big market for e-readers is the textbook crowd, they'd be aware you need the actual page numbers to display for the very reasons you cited.
