I read a book in about 1998 that was a collection of short stories about a group of people that, through the power of touch, could take sensation away from people. They could remove memories or blind people. One story in particular stands out, of a waitress working in a restaurant, and she's almost blind and has sensation missing from all over her body. The final story in the collection was a pianist who deliberately causes his wife to deafen him so he can write more exquisite music. His daughter has her mother's voice. It's absolutely eerie and it was wonderful. I recall the cover was green and black (riding the Matrix's coattails, I imagine.)

Anyone got leads for me?

Unfortunately I haven't read the book you're talking about, but it sounds intriguing! Hope you're able to find it!

Sorry, I'm no help. But it does sound rather interesting. Good luck hunting.

Gosh . . . I don't know.  But if nobody here has an idea, here's a place I go when something like that's bugging me:

http://www.whatsthatbook.com

I've found the titles for six books there that I had lost memory of the author and title to, including one that had been a really longstanding childhood mystery.  Not everything gets solved, but I've had great success there.
